Mississippi River Near Altenburg, Missouri Water Rose Around Tower Rock, Blocking Walkers........
Typically, Tower Rock, the well-known rock formation in the Mississippi River is only accessible by boat, however, a prolonged drought has made it possible to walk out to it.
Once again, water levels have risen around Tower Rock following a few rounds of rainfall. As of this past weekend, the Mississippi River is covering an area people had been using to walk to Tower Rock.
The Missouri Department of Conservation says that the rock formation is accessible to foot traffic when the Mississippi River's "Chester Gauge" is below 1.5 feet. The Tower usually rises about 60 feet over normal river stages........

Upcoming Events.... Saturday, November 5th. Pere Marquette State Park Pere Marquette Hosting Fishing, Hiking Programs........
Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Fishing News From Narragansett, Rhode Island Anglers Reel In World War II Explosive Device........
Last Tuesday, a fishing boat off the coast of Rhode Island made a historical catch that was rather surprising. Captain Glenn Wescott usually catches fish, but this time, he caught something unusual: a relic from World War II.
Wescott says that his crew caught a mysterious object approximately four nautical miles east of Black Island. The Navy Region Mid Atlantic reports that the object was a depth charge. It weighs 520 pounds and contained 267 pounds of TNT.
Wescott called the Coast Guard and they dispatched a team to pick him and his crew and get them to a safe place. The Navy's explosive ordinance mobile unit out of Newport to dispose of the device. Wescott said that it was scary having the device aboard their boat........

Boat Manufacturer Brunswick Posts Record Third Quarter........
Brunswick Corporation recently released their third quarter results, where they posted third quarter net sales of $1.698 billion, which is a 19 percent increase as compared to the third quarter of 2021. Adjusted operating earnings were $278.8 million, a 26.1 percent increase over last year.
Brunswick reported that all segments posted sales increases. The propulsion segment reports a 14 percent sales increase compared to the third quarter of 2021. Parts and accessories posted a 19 percent increase driven by acquisitions finalized last year.
David Foulkes, CEO of Brunswick says that they executed an exceptional third quarter as new products, strategic investments, operational efficiency and careful cost control resulted in record sales........

Boat Gear Manufacturer Garmin Released Third Quarter Results........
Garmin International announced their third quarter earnings, which ended on September 24th. Garmin posted consolidated revenue of $1.14 billion for the quarter, which is a 4 percent decrease.
Gross margin grew to 58.8 percent and operating margin was 21 percent. Operating income was $239 million, a 15 percent decrease compared with the third quarter of 2021.
Revenue for the marine segment decreased by 5 percent during the third quarter. Gross and operating margins were 56 and 23 percent respectively, resulting in operating income of $45 million........

For the past 20 years, the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center has been working to improve the region's water quality and on Thursday, they celebrated this milestone.
In 2002, the NGRREC was formed through a unique partnership between the Illinois Natural History Survey, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Lewis and Clark Community College.
The NGRREC strives to be a leader in scholarly research and education, and outreach related to the connections between large rivers and their floodplains, watersheds as well as their associated communities........

Added Sunday Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Update: Missing Paraglider's Family Asking For Help........
A paraglider was reported missing after failing to arrive at a checkpoint in Hermann, Missouri. The missing man, identified as Kenny Loudermilk was flying with a friend and instructor when he went missing.
Loudermilk is described as a 35 year old white male, six feet tall, with a full reddish-brown beard and hazel eyes. He was wearing an olive colored beanie hat, a black coat, blue jeans and brown work boots. His gear included an orange and black paragliding wing, a red circular paramotor a black backpack attached to the motor and a black helmet.
Family and friends intend to gather at a vigil for Loudermilk at 5:30 pm on Wednesday at Riverside Park in Washington, Missouri........

Paragliding was Kenny Lee Loudermilk's latest hobby and flying over the Missouri River was one of his favorite routes, especially with the fall colors on full display.
On Saturday, more than a dozen of Loudermilk's family and friends gathered near a boat ramp in hopes that his body would be found soon. He is presumed dead after crashing into the Missouri River Wednesday evening.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Dallas Thompson says that they are still actively searching for Loudermilk's body. He added that they know he went into the water, underwater and did not resurface........

Added Sunday Lower Mississippi River Dredging, Buoys Help, More Rainfall Needed........
Even with some rainfall reported within the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, barges have been light-loaded to reduce drafts, however, there have been multiple groundings reported this week.
Randy Chamness, co-chairman of the Lower Mississippi River Committee says that overall the Lower Mississippi River system has remained stable, however, the industry is continuing to keep an eye on conditions.
Earlier in the week, the dredge Hurley and the Dredge Jadwin dredged at Redman Bar at Mile Marker 740 and Battle Axe at Mile Marker 680 respectively. Over that time, the Mississippi River had been closed to traffic, backing up some 150 tows with 2,219 barges resulting in delays of up to six days........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Update: Search For Missing Paraglider Continues........
According to Dallas Thompson, spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Division, the search for the body of a missing 35 year old paraglider pilot from O'Fallon who reportedly crashed into the Missouri River will continue for the foreseeable future.
Thompson says that Troopers have been searching the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri and haven't found any signs of the missing paraglider or it's pilot. The Highway Patrol took over the search efforts Thursday morning after the Washington Fire Department named the MSHP as the lead agency in the search.
Washington Police spokesperson, Detective Steve Sitzes says that Wednesday evening, they were called out to the Missouri River for reports of a paraglider in the river. Eyewitnesses stated that they saw the man land in the middle of the river........

Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Amphitheater Preparing For 2023........
Officials with the Alton Amphitheater Commission have begun planning for the 2023 season. During the Commission's October 19th meeting, they approved seeking proposals for venue naming rights and production services in 2023.
The Amphitheater has hosted many Grammy award winning and nationally recognized musical acts since 2014. During that time, the venue has also hosted music and food festivals as well as non-profit fundraisers.
These events have brought in hundreds of thousands of visitors to Alton's riverfront, making over $6 million in local economic impact, over 3 million total media impressions to the region, over 1,000,000 social media impressions and 14,698 followers to the Alton Amphitheater Facebook page........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Gateway Arch Celebrates 57th Birthday........
Friday marked 57 years since construction workers put the finishing touches on what would become the St. Louis landmark. On October 28, 1965, workers set the 10 ton centerpiece to complete the construction on the Gateway Arch.
According to historians, the Gateway Arch concept dated back to the late 1940s when the City of St. Louis and the National Park Service collaborated and selected a design for a memorial in a nation-wide competition. Architect Eero Saarinen developed the winning design for a stainless steel arch.
Construction costs were funded at $13 million at the time and organizers invested $3.5 million in the transportation system. The Gateway Arch weighs 17,246 tons, and it's 900 tons of stainless steel is more than any other construction project in U.S. history........

Missouri Fishing News MDC To Stock Over 9,000 Rainbow Trout........
The Missouri Department of Conservation is gearing up for their annual winter trout program with the stocking of nearly 9,000 rainbow trout in Perryville's Legion Lake, Jackson's Rotary Lake, Farmington's Giessing Lake and Sikeston Recreation Complex Pond.
The annual MDC winter trout fishing program begins on November 1st, marking the beginning of Missouri's winter trout season. Anglers may fish for trout throughout the fall and winter months on a catch-and-release basis. Anglers may begin harvesting trout starting on February 1st.
Anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 must hold a valid Missouri fishing permit and any angler harvesting trout must also be in the possession of a trout permit........

Added Sunday Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Update: Missing Paraglider's Family Asking For Help........
A paraglider was reported missing after failing to arrive at a checkpoint in Hermann, Missouri. The missing man, identified as Kenny Loudermilk was flying with a friend and instructor when he went missing.
Loudermilk is described as a 35 year old white male, six feet tall, with a full reddish-brown beard and hazel eyes. He was wearing an olive colored beanie hat, a black coat, blue jeans and brown work boots. His gear included an orange and black paragliding wing, a red circular paramotor a black backpack attached to the motor and a black helmet.
Family and friends intend to gather at a vigil for Loudermilk at 5:30 pm on Wednesday at Riverside Park in Washington, Missouri........

Paragliding was Kenny Lee Loudermilk's latest hobby and flying over the Missouri River was one of his favorite routes, especially with the fall colors on full display.
On Saturday, more than a dozen of Loudermilk's family and friends gathered near a boat ramp in hopes that his body would be found soon. He is presumed dead after crashing into the Missouri River Wednesday evening.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Dallas Thompson says that they are still actively searching for Loudermilk's body. He added that they know he went into the water, underwater and did not resurface........

Added Sunday Lower Mississippi River Dredging, Buoys Help, More Rainfall Needed........
Even with some rainfall reported within the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, barges have been light-loaded to reduce drafts, however, there have been multiple groundings reported this week.
Randy Chamness, co-chairman of the Lower Mississippi River Committee says that overall the Lower Mississippi River system has remained stable, however, the industry is continuing to keep an eye on conditions.
Earlier in the week, the dredge Hurley and the Dredge Jadwin dredged at Redman Bar at Mile Marker 740 and Battle Axe at Mile Marker 680 respectively. Over that time, the Mississippi River had been closed to traffic, backing up some 150 tows with 2,219 barges resulting in delays of up to six days........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Update: Search For Missing Paraglider Continues........
According to Dallas Thompson, spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Division, the search for the body of a missing 35 year old paraglider pilot from O'Fallon who reportedly crashed into the Missouri River will continue for the foreseeable future.
Thompson says that Troopers have been searching the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri and haven't found any signs of the missing paraglider or it's pilot. The Highway Patrol took over the search efforts Thursday morning after the Washington Fire Department named the MSHP as the lead agency in the search.
Washington Police spokesperson, Detective Steve Sitzes says that Wednesday evening, they were called out to the Missouri River for reports of a paraglider in the river. Eyewitnesses stated that they saw the man land in the middle of the river........

Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Amphitheater Preparing For 2023........
Officials with the Alton Amphitheater Commission have begun planning for the 2023 season. During the Commission's October 19th meeting, they approved seeking proposals for venue naming rights and production services in 2023.
The Amphitheater has hosted many Grammy award winning and nationally recognized musical acts since 2014. During that time, the venue has also hosted music and food festivals as well as non-profit fundraisers.
These events have brought in hundreds of thousands of visitors to Alton's riverfront, making over $6 million in local economic impact, over 3 million total media impressions to the region, over 1,000,000 social media impressions and 14,698 followers to the Alton Amphitheater Facebook page........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Gateway Arch Celebrates 57th Birthday........
Friday marked 57 years since construction workers put the finishing touches on what would become the St. Louis landmark. On October 28, 1965, workers set the 10 ton centerpiece to complete the construction on the Gateway Arch.
According to historians, the Gateway Arch concept dated back to the late 1940s when the City of St. Louis and the National Park Service collaborated and selected a design for a memorial in a nation-wide competition. Architect Eero Saarinen developed the winning design for a stainless steel arch.
Construction costs were funded at $13 million at the time and organizers invested $3.5 million in the transportation system. The Gateway Arch weighs 17,246 tons, and it's 900 tons of stainless steel is more than any other construction project in U.S. history........

Missouri Fishing News MDC To Stock Over 9,000 Rainbow Trout........
The Missouri Department of Conservation is gearing up for their annual winter trout program with the stocking of nearly 9,000 rainbow trout in Perryville's Legion Lake, Jackson's Rotary Lake, Farmington's Giessing Lake and Sikeston Recreation Complex Pond.
The annual MDC winter trout fishing program begins on November 1st, marking the beginning of Missouri's winter trout season. Anglers may fish for trout throughout the fall and winter months on a catch-and-release basis. Anglers may begin harvesting trout starting on February 1st.
Anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 must hold a valid Missouri fishing permit and any angler harvesting trout must also be in the possession of a trout permit........

Mississippi River Shipping Drought Interrupts Irreplaceable Mississippi River Shipping Corridor........
The Mighty Mississippi River might be in need of a new nickname as the river looks more like a desert than a river north of Memphis, slowing or stranding barge traffic up and down the river.
According to Paul Rohde, who represents the river's shipping and towing industry, the Mississippi River is falling towards record low levels just as farmers are sending their harvests down the river for export.
Rohde says that the Mississippi River is an irreplaceable water super highway that must remain navigable. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been dredging non-stop for the past three months to help keep commerce moving along the river........

Mississippi River Shipping Barge Flow Decreased By Low River Levels........
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's most recent Grain Transportation Report, low water levels along the Lower Mississippi River since 1988 have caused reduced flows, reduced tow sizes and grounded barges, with some areas of the river closing for up to 36 hours at a time.
Ursa Farmers Cooperative General Manager Roger Hugenberg says that the river levels are of concern as elevators handle this year's crop. He states that with some 13,500 barges operating along the river, anything that slows them down is a critical condition as far as grain is concerned.
Hugenberg says that barges carry less grain for a reduction in draft, or how much of the barge is below the waterline, so it takes more barges to haul a given amount of grain........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton City Council Discussing Flood Wall........
The threat of flooding is a part of life in Alton and when the Mississippi River starts to rise, the city spends a lot of time constructing and then disassembling temporary flood walls to protect downtown businesses.
Now, the City Council is considering a more permanent solution and a resolution to consider the construction of a permanent floodwall has been introduced for discussion.
The proposed floodwall would be a five foot high, 1,000 foot long wall that would run approximately from the Tourism Bureau's Visitor's Center to Williams Street. The resolution will be considered during the city's meeting on November 9th........

Boat Gear Manufacturer Dockmate Introduces Remote For Older Vessels........
Dockmate recently announced that they had introduced a wireless remote control docking system for boats that use mechanical controls. The company says that their RED M2E system with a Glendinning smart actuator smart actuator allows plug-and-play installation on vessels with older engine controls.
Dockmate CEO Marc Curreri says that the Dockmate RED M2E allows for all vessels with mechanical controls to be equipped with a wireless remote control at a minimum of cost.
Curreri adds that this is an excellent opportunity for owners to upgrade their boats to a wireless remote control system so they can leave the helm, where visibility is often poor, and safely dock single handedly or recover their anchor or mooring ball from anywhere on-board........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri A Paraglider Crashed Into The Missouri River........
Officials report that the search for an unidentified paraglider who had reportedly crashed into the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri has been called off for the evening and will continue Thursday at 9 am.
According to Steve Sitzes, spokesperson for the Washington Police Department, the missing paraglider is a 35 year old man from O'Fallon, Missouri who was flying west along the river. The two men had taken off from a field near Defiance and were flying to Hermann.
Sitzes says that the paragliders got separated near Washington. Witnesses had reported seeing a paraglider land in the Missouri River and heard his shouts for help before sinking below the water's surface........

Mississippi River Near Altenburg, Missouri You Can't Walk Out To Tower Rock Anymore........
Tower Rock, the formation in the Mississippi River in Perry County, Missouri which had been accessible by foot over recent weeks due to low river levels has become an island once again.
Tuesday evening, the Missouri Department of Conservation reported that the formation may soon become inaccessible by foot. The Mississippi River rose Tuesday night, surrounding the rock with water once again.
Tower Rock is accessible by foot when the Mississippi River is at extremely low water levels below 1.5 feet at the Chester Gauge. As of Wednesday morning, the river stage was at 2.03 feet........

Fishing News From Cleveland, Ohio Anglers Accused Of Cheating Plead Not Guilty.........
On Wednesday, the two anglers accused of packing 5 walleyes with lead weights and fish filets during a fishing tournament have pled not guilty to cheating and other charges.
42 year old Jacob Runyan and 35 year old Chase Cominsky did not comment during their brief court appearance. Their attorneys declined to comment about the case following the hearing.
The cheating allegations were made after Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament director Jason Fischer became suspicious because the pair's fish were considerably heavier than other walleye of similar size........

River Personalities Dennis Watters, Founder Of Watters Search And Recovery Died........
On Tuesday night, Dennis Watters, who founded Team Watters Search and Recovery with his wife, Tammy, passed away after losing his battle with cancer. The couple made a huge difference in people's lives since they began the Search and Recovery by finding their loved ones after a tragedy.
The Watters were Madison County, IL residents, but they traveled around the country to help families bring closure to missing members following tragic events. The Alton Emergency Corps worked closely with Dennis and Tammy.
Dennis had invested in a boat and sonar equipment that allowed him and his team to search creeks, lakes and rivers for missing people. The Watters donated their own funds to help other locate loved ones, and much of their equipment was built by them over the years.........

Mississippi River Near Altenburg, Missouri MDC: Tower Rock May Soon Be Inaccessible By Foot.......
The Missouri Department of Conservation recently announced that Tower Rock may be inaccessible by foot as soon as this weekend, as the Mississippi River is expected to rise 3.5 feet at the Chester Gauge.

Missouri River Management Chronic Drought Reduces Missouri River Levels........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is anticipating another year of below normal snowfall within the Missouri River Basin, however, it may be some time before we see the true effects of the current drought.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Corps hosted a town hall meeting at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Corps says that the Missouri River Reservoir system is currently holding 47 million acre-feet of water, which is 13 million acre-feet more that the system's all-time low set in 2007.
John Remus, the Corps' Chief of the Missouri RIver Basin says that the winter releases from the reservoir system will be less than normal, so the bars will be low over the winter, and likely lower than normal next spring........

Upcoming Events Saturday, October 29, 2022 Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri NPS Hosting Meet The Builders Event At The Arch........
On Saturday, the builders of the Gateway Arch will be meeting up to celebrate the day that they installed the final stainless steel section into place. The National Park Service will be hosting the Gateway Arch National Park's annual Meet the Builders event from 10 am to noon on Saturday, October 29th. This year marks the 57th year of the Arch. It was completed on October 28, 1965.
The public will be able to meet the engineers, tradesmen and support staff who worked in the Arch Tram lobby. Pam Sanfilippo, spokeswoman for the Gateway Arch national Park says that The annual Meet the Builders event gives attendees the chance to meet history and hear stories of the Arch's construction.
A small group of builders will be sharing memories, private memorabilia and photos with attendees. The arch store will be selling commemorative posters for autographs. There will be a special video featuring interviews with several builders playing prior to each showing of Monument to the Dream documentary showing the construction of the Arch. The event is free and open to all ages........

Boat Show News FLIBS Opening Wednesday........
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show will be opening at Noon on Wednesday, October 26th and will run through October 30th. The show will be held in seven locations including:
The Broward County Convention Center, Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina, Pier 66 Marina and Superyacht Village at Pier 66 South.
Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows with Informa Markets says that they are thrilled to be kicking off the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show for it's 63rd year.
Doole added that the 2021 boat show was an absolute blockbuster event, generating more than $1 billion in economic output for the state of Florida and bringing in more than 100,000 attendees.........

Mississippi River Basin Rainfall May Ease Record Low Levels.... Long Term Outlook Remains Dry....
This week, the drought stricken Mississippi River may see a bump in water levels, thanks to the remnants of the Hurricane Roslyn. With the forecasted La Nina winter coming, the Mississippi River is expected to remain low.
This year's intense widespread drought conditions across most of the United States has cost over $9 billion and is causing problems for the river shipping industry.
The low river levels come at the worst possible time, as it is now the peak of the harvest season. Barges are the main method for shipping grain. Reportedly, approximately 60 percent of the U.S. grain production is exported to the world........

Missouri River Near St. Joseph, Missouri Corps Awards $14 Million Contract For Levee Improvements........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District recently awarded a $14 million contract to M CON, LLC for levee improvements along the Unit R471-460 levee located north of U.S. 36 in Buchanan County.
The improvements will raise the levee between 18 inches and three feet, increasing it to 500 year flood protection status. Ron Hook, Buchanan County's Western District Commissioner says that the improvements will be within the current guidelines.
Hook says that construction on the project will begin on Unit R471-460 next month and that the project is expected to be completed by the spring of 2023........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee Civil War-Era Artifacts Discovered Along The Riverbank........
The low levels of the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee has allowed modern-day treasure hunters to discover Civil War-era artifacts along the riverbanks.
This past weekend, Riley Bryant found some Civil War bullets and a U.S. plate that was typically found on the cartridge bags of Civil War soldiers under the old Interstate 55 bridge.
The plate appeared to be in near perfect condition. Bryant says that the plate is worth up to $250, however, he has no intention of selling it. He said that he would be adding it to the display he takes to artifact expos around the nation........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Mercury Marine Opened Global Distribution Center........
Recently, Mercury Marine opened their new purpose built distribution center that will support their parts and accessories business.. The 512,000 square foot facility is located near Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mercury Marine's current distribution center is located at their global headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It will be repurposed to support Mercury's propulsion systems, thus allowing the company to increase capacity as well as their production capabilities.
Chris Drees, Mercury Marine's president, says that they are excited to officially open their new centralized distribution center, which will immediately have a positive effect on global distribution........

Lower Mississippi River Corps Dredging, Working To Keep The Gulf From Contaminating Drinking Water........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in a state of damage control along the Lower Mississippi River as it's levels have fallen to new lows, grounding barges and allowing saltwater to creep up into the river channel.
The Corps is currently constructing an underwater levee near the mouth of the Mississippi River to prevent Gulf of Mexico saltwater from creeping up into the river and threatening water treatment plants.
Further upstream, the Corps is scrambling to perform emergency dredging in order to maintain a nine-foot-deep water channel for barges carrying agricultural goods and fuel up and down the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River at Tower Rock Missouri Dept of Conservation Urges Caution For Those Visiting.....
The Missouri Department of Conservation is calling on people visiting Tower Rock to be safe and courteous. The low water along the Mississippi River has allowed foot access to the 400 million year old landmark which is usually only accessible by boat.
The MDC states that the approximately 32 acre natural area features upland oak-pine and mixed hardwoods and features a vertical geological formation known as "Tower Rock" in the river channel. The area was designated as a Natural Ares in 1972 and the MDC purchased the area in 1973.
Currently, people are able to walk out to Tower Rock, however, officials are warning that the Mississippi River can be dangerous even when it is low. They are also asking visitors not to climb the rock formation and to be courteous to land owners and other visitors when choosing a place to park........

Added Sunday Mississippi River Shipping Low River Levels Concerning Farmers........
Even as farmers are winding up their harvest seasons, more issues are arising among the grain export industry. While the industry avoided a rail strike a few weeks ago, it is still dealing with high diesel fuel costs and now dwindling Mississippi River levels.
According to Curt Kimmel with AgMarket-dot-net, the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri to the north, low water issues are not as severe as they are south of St. Louis. As a result, shippers have had to adjust their loads.
Kimmel says that if the U.S. doesn't get more rainfall soon, exporters will have to rely on the trucking industry more this season than in years past.........

Added Sunday River Shipping News Coast Guard Awarded $30 M Buoy Contract........
Two weeks ago, the U.S. Coast Guard awarded a $30 million contract to H&G Marine Services Inc. for approximately 4,000 buoys. Reportedly, the buoys should arrive at the beginning of November.
Lynn Muench, American Waterways Operators senior vice president-regional advocacy said that the Coast Guard has brought resources in to ensure buoys are in the right location at the right time.
There are around 24,000 navigation aids and 15,000 inland fixed buoys within the Coast Guard Eighth District's area of responsibility and keeping them in position is a never ending battle. How many buoys need to be replaced depends on breakaways, collisions, dredging, storm activity, water levels and weather........

Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri Barges Keep Moving Despite Low River Levels........
As of Friday, the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri was at -2.5 feet. While this is a very low river level for Downtown St. Louis, it is not as low as the record set in January 1940 at -6.2 feet.
Drought conditions are the cause of the low river levels and steps must be taken to guarantee that the river is open to barge traffic. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, there are no restrictions to the navigation channel north of Cairo, Illinois. They are dredging to maintain the channel.
Lou Dell'Orco, chief of operations for the Corps' St. Louis District says that the crew of the Dredge Potter is out there full time making sure that traffic is moving. He notes that it is especially critical to enable river commerce along the Mississippi River to New Orleans in order to support the nation's economy........

Mississippi River at Tower Rock Missouri Dept of Conservation Urges Caution For Those Visiting.....
The Missouri Department of Conservation is calling on people visiting Tower Rock to be safe and courteous. The low water along the Mississippi River has allowed foot access to the 400 million year old landmark which is usually only accessible by boat.
The MDC states that the approximately 32 acre natural area features upland oak-pine and mixed hardwoods and features a vertical geological formation known as "Tower Rock" in the river channel. The area was designated as a Natural Ares in 1972 and the MDC purchased the area in 1973.
Currently, people are able to walk out to Tower Rock, however, officials are warning that the Mississippi River can be dangerous even when it is low. They are also asking visitors not to climb the rock formation and to be courteous to land owners and other visitors when choosing a place to park........

On Saturday, October 22, from 11 am to 7 pm, a new family-friendly festival will be held in downtown Cape Girardeau along Water Street and Riverfrotn Park along the floodwall. Event organizers say that the one day event celebrates the autumn season in Southeast Missouri.
The Riverfront Fall Festival will feature live music, children's activities, including a costume contest, face painting, balloon animals, games and a crafting station, food and drinks, entertainment as well as local artisans and vendors.
There will be theatrical storytelling along the Mississippi RIver by Christy Mershon and Dr. Joe; Rhodes. Musical entertainment will feature Steve Shafner & the Jumper Cables, Maggie Thorn, Jason Heeter Band, Logan Chapman and the Ivas John Band........

On Saturday, November 19th The Loading Dock will be reopening their indoor ice rink and kicking off their annual ice skating season. The Loading Dock's outdoor patio will remain open throughout the season.
The Ice Rink will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through February 26, 2023 and will have extended hours during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. There are also special events planned, including a visit with Santa on December 11th and a New Year's Eve Balloon Drop on December 31st.
The Loading Dock Ice Rink will offer private rink rentals during non-business hours as well as party packages for 15 guests that include pizza, soda and s'mores in a heated party tent........

On Friday morning, the American Countess Riverboat docked in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, despite the low water levels along the Mississippi River, The boat was moored until 5 pm.
The American Countess is capable of carrying up to 245 passengers for river cruises.

During times of normal river levels, Tower Island is surrounded by water, however, the low Mississippi River levels revealed a limestone bridge allowing people to walk across....

Coldwater Creek In Northern St. Louis County, Missouri Health Concerns Arise Along Missouri River Tributary........
There are increasing concerns about radioactive contamination along Coldwater Creek, a Missouri River tributary that runs from Overland, past the St. Louis-Lambert International Airport and though North St. Louis County.
Following historic July flooding, a third party recently found radioactive contamination in and around Jana Elementary School. The school is shutting down as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they would be conducting their own testing starting Monday.
Concerns are growing amongst those who grew up in the areas surrounding Coldwater Creek as many are sick with cancer and auto-immune diseases believed to have been caused by exposure to radioactive waste from The Manhattan Project, which had leached into Coldwater Creek........

Illinois Fishing News Anglers Expect Less Cheating After Ohio Fishing Scandal........
Over the past several years, the popularity of fishing and fishing tournaments has exploded, and a scandal during a recent fishing tournament in Ohio has even led to criminal charges.
Will Ash, an employee of Bluff City Outdoors in Alton, Illinois says that the cheating scandal has been a hot topic amongst anglers. He added that he is hopeful that there is enough honesty in the fishing community that will help keep cheaters in check.
There is also hope that the actions taken in response to the scandal will help reduce the incentive for cheating. Angler Rickey Carriker says that those involved with the scandal will be known as cheaters for the rest of their lives.
This weekend, Bluff City Outdoors will be hosting their annual Bluff City Outdoors Fall Brawl fishing tournament........

Mississippi River Near Helena-West Helena, Arkansas Anglers Reel In 100-Plus Year Old Boat From The Mississippi River........
This weekend, Helena-West Helena will be hosting the inaugural Bill Dance Mississippi River Monster's Mega Bucs catfishing tournament and anglers from across the nation have arrived to hit the water to look for the best spots to fish.
Earlier this week, a team doing some surveying found a bit more than fish; they found an old wooden fishing boat that was recently revealed by the retreating Mississippi River.
The old boat was upside down and poking out of the riverbed. An archaeology team headed out to the site and excavated the vessel and estimated it to be from 1910........

Mark Twain Lake Corps Hosting Mark Twain Lake Fishing Tournament........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake and the Mark Twain Lake Visitors and Educational Resource Center Committee have announced that they will be hosting an amateur photo contest.
The free contest is open to anyone in the public. Submitted photos should represent the Mark Twain Lake region and may be from the past or present. Photos must be submitted in person at the M.W. Boudreaux Center during normal business hours.
THe photos may range in size from 4X6 to no larger than 8X10. A maximum of four photos may be submitted by one person. Winners will be announced on Monday, December 19th........
