Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri

Update:  No Sign Of Missing Paraglider A Month Later........

Search and rescue teams have been searching the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri on a near daily basis, but still have not found any signs of Kenny Loudermilk, his belongings or his motorized paraglider.

According to Corporal Dallas Thompson, a spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, this is fairly normal.  He adds that if it went down with the victim, it stays on them until they are found and recovered.

Loudermilk was a 35 year old O'Fallon resident who was last seen in the Missouri River after his paraglider crashed on October 26th. Since he disappeared, multiple crews have been searching for him........

Upper Mississippi River Barge Shipping Season Draws To A Close........

On Tuesday morning, November 29, 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers witnessed the final barge of the 2022 shipping season exit Lock and Dam No. 2 at St. Paul, Minnesota.

The 2022 barge shipping season began last March when a vessel broke through the ice on Lake Pepin while on it's way to St. Paul.  While the shipping season is closed, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers carries out maintenance projects and repairs.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates that approximately 589 million tons of freight are carried along the Mississippi River each year, which in turn creates an annual transportation savings of $12.5 billion........

   River History....

November 30, 1835 in River History

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.
He is one of Missouri's favorite native son's. The man was born in Florida, Mo, lived in Hannibal, Mo and St. Louis Mo.

He was a riverboat captain, a journalist, a lecturer (comic) and an author.

He lived most of his boyhood years on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Mo and the town and its inhabitants became the subjects of Mark Twain's later famous writings........ especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

At the age of seventeen Samuel Clemens went to work on the Mississippi River and later became a steamboat pilot.

His pen name ....."Mark Twain" came from his years on the river. When two fathoms or 12 feet of water were measured on the sounding line the words "Mark Twain" were called out to the riverboat captain... meaning ..."Safe Water."

Born .....November 30, 1835 Died.....April 21, 1910

Rising River Levels Ease Barge Crisis........

This fall, low water levels within the Mississippi River Basin has seriously affected barge traffic and grain exports by slowing shipments from across the Midwest to the Port of New Orleans.

Now, following months of dry conditions throughout the Mississippi River Basin, water levels in the Lower Mississippi River, which extends from Cairo, Illinois to the Gulf of Mexico, are on the rise.

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report that they are continually dredging the river channel, restricting tow sizes and barge loads in an effort to prevent groundings........

Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri

Corps, State To Study Flooding ........

Multiple flooding events along the Missouri River in 1993, 2011 and 2019 have prompted the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to team up with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a flood risk mitigation feasibility study.

Officials made the announcement on Monday.  Jefferson City is one of three areas in Missouri where solutions to avert Missouri River flooding will be assessed.

Dru Buntin, Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources says that this is an important step towards providing support for tangible improvements and learning from past flood events in a way that doesn't just repeat the same cycle........

New Illinois River Port District Plans It's Future........

On October 12, 2022, the Illinois Waterways Ports held their first annual meeting at the EastPort Marina in East Peoria, Illinois.  During the meeting, State Senator Dave Koehler discussed how the port designation would help the district attract investments.

Last year's federal designation named a 10 county, 175 mile long section of the river as the Illinois Waterway Ports and Terminals Port Statistical Area.  Long-time port district supporter, Robert Sinkler says that the designation opens up the opportunity for additional federal investment to flow into the region.

Dan Silverthorn, board chairman of the Heart of Illinois Regional Port District said that by combining these 10 counties and creating this linear port and a port statistical area, they are now recognized as the 42nd largest port in the nation........

Coast Guard Seeing Increased Workload Due To Low Water Levels........

The recent droughts have cause low water conditions within the Mississippi River Basin.  Along some sections of the river, only the central shipping channel is open.  This is causing an increased workload for the U.S. Coast Guard's Upper and Lower Mississippi River sectors.

The Coast Guard has established Marine Transportation System Recovery Units to deal with the low water conditions.  The MTSRUs guarantee navigational safety while protecting the environment along the Mississippi River.

The cuttermen are tasked with verifying that the channel marking buoys are set tot he correct depths in spite of the constantly varying water conditions.  If the buoys are too shallow, crews have to relocate them to deeper water in an effort to maintain an adequate shipping channel........

Barge Delays May Affect Consumer Prices In The Future........

There is a connection between the historically low river levels along the Mississippi River and the food prices at the supermarket.  The barge backups that have only recently begun to ease are among several factors that will likely raise the cost of food.

Experts say that the worst impact may not be felt for several months.  Pawan Joshi, a vice president with supply chain software company e2Open, says that the current state of the economy is the main contributor to price increases, however, the barge shipping situation doesn't help.

Ben Lerner, a vice president with the American Waterways Operators in Arlington, Virginia says that under normal conditions, it could take a barge laden with agricultural product 14 days to complete the round-trip between Cairo, Illinois and New Orleans.  Thanks to the low water levels, that time has doubled........

It was a severe scour issue associated with the Lock and Dam 25 Overflow Dike. The Overflow Dike was under an

Sand was dredged into the scour hole and the river bank line was re-established with stone revetment. The newly placed dredge material was covered with a layer of bedding stone and topped with larger stone.

Traffic Remains Steady Along The Tenn-Tom Waterway........

Barge traffic may have been slowed down considerably along the Mississippi River due to the lingering drought, however, waterways such as the Tennessee-Tombigbee, which are controlled via a system of locks and dams, have not been affected by reduced rainfall.

Even though traffic has been backing up along the Mississippi River, the Tenn-Tom Waterway has yet to see an increase in traffic.  Roger Wilson, the Tenn-Tom Waterway Navigations Manager says that even though the waterway is not affected by the drought, the amount of cargo that can pass through the waterway is less that what can be floated down the Mississippi River.

Wilson says that the Mississippi River can still pass 24 barge tows, however, the Tenn-Tom can only pass eight barges.  He adds that they won't expect to see an increase in barge traffic until the Mississippi River is restricted below eight barges.........

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a 234 mile long man-made waterway constructed in the 20th Century between the Tennessee River to it's junction with the Black Warrior-Tombigbee River system near Demopolis, Alabama.  The Tenn-Tom Waterway links commercial navigation from the nation's midsection to the Gulf of Mexico.  The waterway was completed in December of 1984 with a total cost of close to $2 billion........

Reportedly, Kelligari began struggling in the water and slipped beneath the surface and did not come back up.  Kunta dove into the water in an effort to save Kelligari, but he did not resurface either........

Lake Michigan

The Coast Guard's "Christmas Ship" Is Headed To Chicago........

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw and it's crew are headed down Lake Michigan towards Chicago, where it's cargo of 1,200 Christmas trees will be used to recreate the holiday spirit of the Christmas Tree Ship, the Rouse Simmons, which sank in November 1912.

On Saturday, the 240 foot icebreaker departed from Cheboygan, Michigan after volunteers from the nearby community and the Wolverine High School helped the crew load hundreds of trees onto the cutter's fantail.

The Mackinaw carries out this sentimental journey to honor the Rouse Simmons, which was a three mast schooner that sank in 1912 while sailing to Chicago with a load of Christmas trees ........

Mississippi River Levels

Drought Conditions Are Improving Along The Mississippi River........

Federal officials say that the record breaking drought throughout the Mississippi RIver Basin is starting to ease.  This fall, the low water levels affected barge traffic and grain exports by slowing the shipments from the Midwest to the Port of New Orleans.

The river levels dropped so low that saltwater began to creep upstream from the Gulf of Mexico, threatening drinking supplies.  Now, the river levels are starting to rise in the Lower Mississippi RIver Valley.

Currently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging the middle section of the Mississippi River, which extends from St. Louis south to Cairo, Illinois, in order to maintain workable riverbed depths........

Corps Updates Illinois Senator Durbin On Water Infrastructure Projects........

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin recently met with the U.S. Army Corps of  Engineers, Rock Island District Commander Colonel Jesse Curry for an update on several Illinois water infrastructure projects.

These projects include the restoration of Quincy Bay, the Brandon Road project, which is intended to protect the Great Lakes from the spread of invasive Asian carp and the modernization of Illinois locks and Dams through the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program.

Durbin says that this infrastructure is crucial to Illinois' economy.  He adds that with the millions of dollars in federal funding through the bipartisan NESP, their locks and dams can finally be modernized........

Corps Considering Removing Two Mississippi River Dams........

Two locks and dams along the Mississippi River in the heart of the Twin Cities are at the center of a federal study to determine whether they may be closed, sold or even possible completely removed.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began their study into the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam, in addition to Lock and Dam No.1, which is also called the Ford Dam, as it's hydroelectric plant provided power to the Ford plant in St. Paul.

This study will consider whether the Corps has an interest in continuing to operate the structures, which see little commercial traffic following the closure of the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in 2015........

Downtown Alton, IL

20th Annual Green Gift Bazaar

Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project and Alton Main Street to Host 20th Annual Green Gift Bazaar on Small Business Saturday

ALTON, IL -- Sierra Club Illinois’ Three Rivers Project and Alton Main Street are celebrating Small Business Saturday by hosting the 20th annual Green Gift Bazaar. On Saturday, November 26, this event will give community members the opportunity to purchase eco-friendly gifts for upcoming special occasions while supporting small businesses during the holiday season. The bazaar will feature over 40 vendors selling homemade jewelry, art, ceramic pottery, clothing and accessories, herbal products, and much more. Plan a day of shopping with your friends and family to celebrate Small Business Saturday and pick up unique, locally-made, “green” gifts for everyone on your list!

Join us in Downtown Alton between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 26 at two different locations—the Jacoby Arts Center located at 627 East Broadway and Post Commons located at 300 Alby Street. There is no entry fee to shop at either location. Both locations will feature vendors selling a variety of environmentally-friendly gift ideas that are made from recycled or upcycled materials, Fair Trade, or hand crafted in the United States. In addition, shoppers will receive information about sales from downtown Alton retailers and restaurants. For more information, visit the event page on Facebook at fb.me/e/2aRVrcx43.

“The Three Rivers Project works to preserve the rivers and natural areas of the Piasa Palisades region by empowering community members to act as citizen scientists. The Green Gift Bazaar offers the community a chance to lean into that role by making eco-conscious purchases ahead of the holiday season,” said Christine Favilla, Co-Coordinator of the Three Rivers Project of Sierra Club Illinois. “Sierra Club will also offer a kids’ holiday make-and-take craft booth and feature alternative gift wrapping ideas for folks who want to wrap their gifts with recycled materials. We look forward to welcoming the community to the 20th annual Green Gift Bazaar to kickstart the holiday season with Mother Earth in mind!”

“Instead of hustling through crowds on Black Friday or scrambling to buy holiday gifts last minute, join us at the Green Gift Bazaar on Small Business Saturday!” said Sara McGibany, Executive Director of Alton Main Street. “We’re proud to provide eco-friendly gift options to the community while also giving friendly local artists, independent businesses, and restaurants a boost for the 20th year in a row. We’ll also provide shoppers with ‘sales and specials’ information from downtown retailers and restaurants. We hope to see you on November 26th!”

“In partnership with the Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Program, we will also offer a free Holiday Light Exchange at the Jacoby Arts Center. People can bring their old strands of holiday lights and trade them in for a free LED strand,” Christine Favilla said. “Energy Star qualified holiday lighting strings consume 75 percent less electricity than old-fashioned conventional incandescent light strings. This will be a first come, first serve exchange while supplies last.”

Tuesday, November 29 is "Giving Tuesday", and the Future Angler Foundation is hoping that recreational fishing and anglers of all types will support the groups programs which aim to introduce the public to fishing and boating via educational, promotional and grass-roots efforts to recruit, retain and reactivate anglers and boaters.

Patrick Neu, FAF president says that creating anglers and boaters is their mission, and that this mission can have a truly positive impact on those that participate in these activities.

For those that don't have family members of mentors involved in fishing and boating, getting started in these activities can be difficult.  The FAF seeks to bridge the gap by supporting individuals and organizations that volunteer their time and resources to teach anglers and families that would like to learn more about boating and fishing........

Mississippi River Shipping

Low River Levels Threatens Grain Exports........

Low water levels along the Mississippi River may be affecting corn and other grain prices, however, officials say that they are not likely to affect fertilizer deliveries into Canada.

The Mississippi River accounts for 62 percent of all U.S. corn shipments, 51 percent of soybean exports and 12 percent of wheat exports.  Rich Nelson, chief strategist with Allendale Inc. says that barge restrictions may limit the amount of U.S. grain and oilseeds that are exported this year.

StoneX is estimating that as of November 3rd, corn shipments were 322 million bushels off pace to meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture's export target.  Soybean exports were 76 million bushels off pace and wheat exports were 18 million bushels off pace........

Missouri Waterfowl Hunting

MDC Remind Hunters Of Waterfowl Regulations For The 2022 - 23 Hunting Season......

The fall waterfowl migration is upon us and Missouri's duck and goose hunting season has arrived as well.  As a result, the Missouri Department of Conservation has released some important information that will assist waterfowl hunters in the St. Louis region.

St. Charles County Conservation Agent James Bolden says that the St. Louis region is lucky to be in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway and has both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers contained within.

The MDC currently manages two conservation areas in the St. Louis region for waterfowl hunting, the Marais Temps Clair in St. Charles County and B.K. Leach in Lincoln County.  These areas have morning draws to allocate hunting positions........

Indiana Man Guilty Of Dumping A Ton Of Catfish Into An Illinois Lake........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reports that Michael Sullivan of Griffith, Indiana recently pled guilty and has been ordered to pay $10,500 in restitution after he illegally imported 2,600 pounds of live channel catfish into Illinois.

Officials report that Sullivan imported the catfish into a Plainfield lake on three different occasions during 2021.  The catfish were purchased from Alabama and Mississippi.  The IDNR offers free importation permits to importers with tested, disease-free fish.

According to the IDNR says that channel catfish are one of the species that is susceptible to viral hemorrhagic septicemia, which can devastate fish populations........

Mississippi River Near Cordova, Illinois

Chemicals From 3M Factory Released Into The River........

The towns and rural farmsteads along the Mississippi River were recently alerted to some disturbing news concerning their drinking water.  Reportedly, chemicals from a 3M factory near Cordova, Illinois have worked their way into the river and their wells.

The 3M facility manufactures adhesives used for Scotch tape and Post It notes and other popular products.  The facility also produces "forever chemicals" known as PFAs, which are a threat to human health.

In 2019, water and wastewater sampling performed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency detected the chemicals.  The EPA is now saying that the drinking water of about 300,000 people in the Quad Cities region will need more testing to guarantee it's safety........

SLU Research:  Microplastics End Up In Rivers in Populated Areas........

Researchers with St. Louis University recently published a paper in Environmental Pollution that reveals that the proximity of humans is the best indicator of microplastics being present in the Meramec River.

SLU researchers looked at microplastic levels at 19 sites situated along the Meramec River including areas downstream from a major metropolitan as well as less populated areas.

Elizabeth Hasenmueller, Ph.D., associate professor of Earth and atmospheric sciences and associate director of the WATER Instate at SLU says that the distribution of microplastics in the watershed was not driven by water flow or sediment inputs, but rather it was related to how close the site was to inputs of wastewater or a city........

Wikipedia:

Microplastics are fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm (0.20 in) in length, They cause pollution by entering natural ecosystems from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing, food packaging, and industrial processes.

River Shipping News

Mississippi River Sees Some Relief

St. Lawrence River Starting To Fall........

Finally, there are some improvements to the conditions along the Mississippi River.  Week over week, 35 percent more barges were unloaded in New Orleans, which means that more goods are making their way down to the ports.

Unfortunately, barges are still carrying up to 30 percent less, which is affecting producer profits as shipping costs are still higher than normal.  The USDA says that farmers are making about $2 per bushel of both corn and soybeans.

The St. Lawrence River in Canada is starting to fall prompting U.S. and Canadian officials to consider increasing water flow from the eastern end of Lake Ontario to improve conditions for commercial ship traffic........

River Reading

Alton Author Publishes Missouri River Story Collection.......

James Schaap, an author from Alton, Illinois, looks for stories to tell wherever he goes.  Occasionally, those stories come to him via another storyteller or a monument inspires him to look into it's history.

Schaap scours archives and libraries looking for manuscripts and books on regional history.  There, he unearths stories from the pages of rarely read volumes and dusty tomes.  If not for his efforts, these stories might never see the light of day.

Schaap's most recent book, Small Wonders:  A Museum of Missouri River Stories, is a collection of about a dozen stories written in 2016, when he was selected for the Homestead National Monument of America's Centennial Artist-in-Residence program........

Mississippi River Lifestyles

Growing Up Along the Mississippi and Kaskaskia Rivers........

While growing up, Alan Guebert lived on a southern Illinois dairy farm just a mile from the Mississippi River.  During the summer months Alan and his older brother David would go camp on the river as a way to beat the heat in an un-air-conditioned farmhouse.

After a short hike along the levees, the brothers would camp out on a massive sandbar at the confluence of the Mississippi and Kaskaskia Rivers.  The sandbar provided enough driftwood for an all-night fire and plenty of sugary sand for their starlit beds.

Their mother had only one condition for the boys taking this adventure; no swimming in either the Kaskaskia or Mississippi Rivers.  And the boys never did....  Honest!

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

New Details Emerge About Chouteau's Landing Development........

Greg Gleicher, Founder and CEO of Food Developments Group recently discussed plans for a billion-dollar development project along the St. Louis riverfront, south of the Poplar Street Bridge once known as Chouteau's Landing.

During the 1800s, the area was filled with factories, stores and homes.  During that time, the city relied on the river and the fur trade.  As the 1900s rolled around, people began moving out of the area and eventually, new highways cut the area off from the rest of downtown.

Good Development Group intends to develop the project, dubbed Gateway South, with the intention of capitalizing on it's access to the Mississippi River, existing railways and roads, with barges and shipping routes taking what is made in St. Louis around the nation........

Mississippi River Shipping

Riverboat Pilot Discusses River Conditions........

Perhaps the best way to get a first-hand look at the low river levels along the Mississippi River and the effects on shipments is to step into the pilot house of a river tow boat.

Jimmy Cheatham, perhaps better known as Capt-J Rock on Tik-Tok uses the social media provider to show the issues that towboats are facing.  He notes that the Mississippi River in 2022 is very similar to what it was like in 2012 and 1988.

Cheatham acknowledges that the Mississippi River has hit some record lows, however, shipping never completely stopped.  He points out that there have been temporary closures due to dredging efforts, but commerce is still moving........

23 November 2004 in River History

On this day the rusting hull of the Towboat America was moved from it's mooring site on the Mississippi River just below Winfield Dam to a new mooring on the Illinois River near Kampsville, IL.

A Little History

The Towboat AMERICA had a sister boat named UNITED STATES. These were two of the first "Super Towboats" used on the lower Mississippi River. Both had four engines and regularly pushed 40 barges. They were huge...184' by 58'. They had Cooper-Bessemer diesels, which provided 9,000 horsepower, and quadruple screws. St. Louis Ship built the Towboat America in 1960 for Federal Barge Line.

In 1980 the America was sold to Logan Towing and the 1985 Inland River Record has it 'taken back June 1984 by Hibernia National Bank, New Orleans and sold at public auction April 1985.

After removed from service, the interior was stripped and made into a floating restaurant/showboat for use in St. Paul. This did not fully materialize and the boat was later sold to the Goldstein interests of Davenport, Iowa, to be made into a landing boat for one of the casinos in the area. This again did not prove fruitful. The boat was then moved to Wood River, Ill., at Economy Boat Store for a year or so, and then to it's mooring spot near Winfield Dam.

NTSB Blames Faulty Genset, Steering Loss for Tow Grounding........

The National Transportation Safety Board recently released their report on a barge accident that occurred along the Mississippi River near Greenville, Mississippi on November 21, 2021.

The NTSB cites a genset failure and subsequent loss of steerage as the cause of  the tow vessel Marquette Warrior, which was pushing 35 barges to run aground at Mile Marker 538.

Four barges were damaged, including a hopper barge loaded with soybeans that partially sank. None of the 9 member crew of the Marquette Warrior were injured.  The grounding caused $1.24 million in damages to the vessel barges and cargo........

Yamaha Adds Plant-Based Materials For PWC Parts........

Yamaha Marine U.S. Business Unit recently announced that they are adopting the use of plant-derived cellulose nanofiber reinforced resin in the manufacture of certain watercraft components.

The CNF was developed via a partnership between Japan's Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd and Nippon Paper Industries Corporation, Ltd, and represents the world's first practical use of sustainable material for watercraft parts.

The CNF parts will be installed in certain 2024 models of personal watercraft and sport boat engines.  The use of CNF technology is an effort to reduce the company's environmental footprint.......

MDC Won't Back Proposed Trout fishing Derby........

The Missouri Department of Conservation says that they are not interested in supporting a proposed annual trout derby that would be held at City Lake in Union, Missouri.

Earlier in the fall, the Missouri Department of Conservation stocked Union City Lake with 2,000 trout before the start of catch and release fishing which began on November 1.  Anglers are not allowed to keep the fish until February 1.

Chad Scott, owner of Hyperlocal Extreme Weather contacted the Union Parks Director Chad Pohlman requesting that February 1 be designated as the annual trout derby at City Lake.  Pohlman forwarded Scott's request to the MDC who stated that they would not currently support the event........

Dorena-Hickman Ferry Resumes Operation After Two Month Closure........

On November 16, 2022, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry, which crosses the Mississippi River between Dorena, Missouri and Hickman, Kentucky, resumed service after being closed since September 12th due to low water conditions.

The ferry reopened after the Mississippi River rose to 17.15 feet at Cairo, Illinois, which allowed the ferry to access the Missouri landing.  The Mississippi River was expected to rise to 19 feet at Cairo prior to making a slow fall over the next week.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is the only direct link between Missouri and Kentucky and provides a crucial link between the states for not only commuters and farmers, but for tourists seeking a convenient route between Missouri and the popular fishing and recreation areas nearby........

The Mississippi River Delta

LSU Researchers To Map The Delta To Study Mudslides........

A team of researchers from Louisiana State University is looking at how hurricanes and other events that contribute to mudslides in the Gulf of Mexico in an effort to better understand the effects that mudslides have on offshore energy production.

In order to determine where and when mudslides will occur, the LSU researchers will map the sea floor around the Mississippi River Delta, which splits into the Southwest Pass, the South Pass and Pass a Loutre.  Officials say their work will provide the first comprehensive map of the Delta in over 40 years.

Sam Bentley, the marine geologist who is leading the team says that the last major study like this was in the 1970s and was also led by LSU.  He notes that a lot has changed since then, from seabed conditions to the tools used to map the sea floor and the needs for offshore energy infrastructure........

Missouri River Near Kansas City, Missouri

Does The Weather Change When You Cross It?

The local lore says that the weather is different north and south of the Missouri River.  In other words, people tend to believe that it is a bit warmer south and it snows a bit more in the north.

Joe Lauria, meteorologist for Fox 4 says that there can be a difference.  He notes that on the south side, which he describes as primarily below Interstate 70, was drier in July than the north side.

July was mild at Kansas City International Airport in the Northland, only about 0.9 degrees above average.  On the south side at Olathe Executive Airport, temperatures were 3.1 degrees above average........

Aldermen Approve Legislation To Help Finance Marina Development........

On Friday, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved legislation that would help finance the proposed $323 million marina complex with hotels, restaurants and an indoor waterpark along the city's far northern riverfront.

The legislation allows for the formation of transportation development and community improvement districts that could charge sales taxes within the location, located off Riverview Drive north of Interstate 270.

Critics have warned that the controversial 67 acre Lighthouse Point's proposed marina would cause environmental problems along the Mississippi River and interfere with port operations elsewhere along the riverfront........

Mississippi River At The Chain Of Rocks

What Are Those Mysterious Towers In The Middle Of The River?

Just north of St. Louis, along the Mississippi River at the Chain of Rocks are two mysterious towers located out in the river.  Many wonder what they are and why they are there.

In the late 1800s, the City of St. Louis experienced a rapid population boom, and a new water source was needed to provide water for the city's inhabitants.  Officials sought out a location north of the city, away from the industrial plants and settled on the shallow Chain of Rocks area.

In 1894, William S. Ames designed Water Intake Tower number 1 on an oval platform in the Romanesque style.  The second Water Intake Tower was built in 1915.  It was designed by Roth and Study, who were inspired to construct it in the Roman Renaissance style.  Both Towers are still in use by the city........
