Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Motorists Spot Couple, Dog Walking On River Ice........
At around 4:30 pm Thursday evening, motorists along the Great River Road spotted two people and a dog walking on ice on the Mississippi River.
69 year old John Dunphy saw the people and took a photo of them. He says that he can't remember the last time he saw people walking on the frozen river. He added that it is dangerous as hell.
This incident occurred even as responders continue to search the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri for 34 year old Aaron Duenke who was last seen on an ice flow Tuesday afternoon........

Missouri River History Steamboat Arabia Museum Not Moving To St. Charles........
David Hawley, owner of the Steamboat Arabia Museum in the River Market, recently announced that they will not be moving their collection to a location in St. Charles, Missouri.
Back in May, Hawley had sent a letter stating that they were looking for a site that would allow for the museum to expand. Hawley was planning on excavating another sunken riverboat, the Malta.
Hawley and the city of St. Charles were not able to reach an agreement on the move. The Hawley family was reportedly concerned at the amount of land that would be accessible under the city's plan........

Meramec River Near Valley Park, Missouri Take A Look Back At The Winter 2015 Flooding.......
During the winter of 2015, there was historic flooding along the Meramec River. On December 30, 2015, floodwaters had closed Interstate 44 and placed Valley Park under a mandatory evacuation order.
The Meramec River had inundated homes in Eureka, Missouri and completely swamped the intersection of Interstate 44 and Highway 141. 24 miles of Interstate would end up being closed.
In Fenton, Missouri, the sewage treatment plant was swamped, and there was free-flowing water over the St. Louis Soccer Park........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Mask Mandate Returns To The Gateway Arch........
The National Park Service announced that beginning Tuesday, visitors will be required to wear masks in all of the federal buildings at the Gateway Arch National Park.
The mask mandate was prompted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID-19 Community Levels tracker. Reportedly, both St. Louis City and St. Louis County COVID-19 levels are listed as "high".
The park service states that cloth masks will no longer be allowed. All visitors and staff are required to wear a surgical mask, procedure mask or respirator. Free surgical masks are going to be available for visitors at the Arch information desk........

Congress recently passed the Water Resources Development Act of 2022, which is the biennial federal authority legislation, with an expansion and the addition of multiple high-impact programs for the Upper Mississippi River.
According to Scott Gritters, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Bellevue, Iowa, the WRDA is always much-anticipated and significant to the tri-state region.
This year's WRDA almost doubled the funding authorization of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration program, going from $40 million to $75 million, marking the largest increase in funding to date........

Ohio River At Cave-In-Rock, Illinois The Cave-In-Rock Ferry Has Resumed Service........
On Monday morning, December 26th, the Cave-In-Rock Ferry resumed service. The ferry had been closed since Friday morning due to severe winter weather conditions.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that extremely cold temperatures, rising moisture off of the Ohio River and freezing on the ferry were the reason for the ferry service shut down.
The rising moisture was limiting visibility and causes more problems by freezing over the pilothouse windows. Another issue was that the metal ramps used to dock the ferry for loading and unloading were freezing over........

Missouri River In Nebraska Ice Causing Record Low Flow Rates........
Ice seems to be affecting the river level gauges along the Missouri River. As of Monday evening, the gauge at Nebraska City was reporting that the Missouri River was at 1.1 feet, which is it's lowest level since 1967.
The Missouri River near Brownville, Nebraska had fallen two feet over the weekend, however, as of Sunday, the river was still at 15 feet. Further downstream at Rulo, Nebraska, the river level was once again less than 1 foot.
Over the past 60 years, Rulo has had seven readings of less than one foot. The measurement of negative 1 foot, recorded at 7:30 pm, would be a new record low........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Stockpiling Clay To Build Levees........
Greenup Industries recently completed the Stockpile 2 project for the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project and is slated to wrap up Stockpile 1 next summer.
The company had been contracted to excavate, process and stockpile clay from the Bonnet Carre Spillway by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The clay will be used to build 17.5 miles of a levee system offering 100 year protection between the Bonnet Carre Spillway and Garyville, Louisiana.
Rodney Greenup, CEO of Greenup Industries says that they are honored to be part of this project which will provide badly needed flood protection for the River Region........

Green Boating News Conference To Discuss Marinas Of The Future........
These days, there is plenty of talk about electric and hybrid propulsion systems and the attendees getting ready for the annual Association of Marina Industries Conference & Expo are discussing if marinas will be ready to host the electrified boats of the future.
Kayce Florio, coordinator of the conference and business manager for the Association of Marina Industries says that there needs to be a greater connection between boat manufacturers, dealers and marinas.
Florio added that it is good that the marine industry is shifting towards hybrid and electric propulsion. She says that the marinas need to be prepared for this and she intends to get marinas more representation at the table........

More Information Corps Approves $2.3 Billion Mississippi River Diversion Mississippi River Near Ironton, Louisiana........
THe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi Valley Division and the New Orleans District recently granted the conditional permit and Section 408 permission to Louisiana's Coastal Protection & Restoration Authority for the $2.3 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion along the western bank of the Mississippi River near Ironton, Louisiana.
The diversion involves Cutting into the levee just above Ironton and the construction of a 2 mile long canal heading southwest to the upper portions of Barataria Bay. The Barataria region is encountering some of the highest rates of land loss in a state that is losing roughly a football field of land every 100 minutes due to erosion and subsidence.
The long sought-after project has been rather contentious because of the anticipated negative effects it will have on marine mammals in the Barataria Basin, commercial fishing in the region as well as navigation along the Mississippi River........

More Information Mississippi River Gulf Outlet Senator Praises Congressional Authorization To Restore SE Louisiana Wetlands........
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) recently championed the Congressional authorization of a federal effort to restore the wetlands destroyed by Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.
The MRGO destroyed more than 600,000 acres of coast surrounding the Greater New Orleans area. The MRGO also allowed saltwater to flow inland from the Gulf of Mexico, destroying over 27,000 acres of Louisiana's wetlands, which served as a natural storm buffer.
With the reduction of wetlands and more open water, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet became a storm surge superhighway during Hurricane Katrina. Kennedy says that building the canal was a mistakes.
Kennedy states that they have approved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin implementing the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet restoration plan. THe plan will involve the Corps filling the canal in and repairing the habitat damaged during the channel's construction........

Mississippi River Shipping Tow Boat Captain Penned Poem To Capture 1988's Low Water Issues........
The recent low water conditions along the Mississippi River has brought to mind the drought of 1988, when similar low water conditions caused the barge shipping industry serious problems.
Captain Mike Rushing, owner of Rushing Marine Service, participated in two convoys authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard as a method for getting tows moving. Rushing says that the convoys worked because a group of 5 towboats and their tows stayed together and worked together during the voyage.
Captain Rushing penned a poem about one of the convoys that captured just what it was like working along the Mississippi River during the drought of 1988........

Added Sunday Missouri River Near Atchison, Kansas Ice Jam Prompts Call For Water Conservation........
The City of Atchison, Kansas recently asked residents to temporarily limit their water usage because an ice jam was found along the Missouri River on Tuesday.
The ice jam is causing the Missouri River to back up, causing Atchison to see another one and a half foot drop in the Mississippi River over the next several days.
The City says that the rivers have reached a low level that makes the use of permanent water intakes pumps impossible and they are currently relying on the auxiliary pump to draw water until the river levels are restored after the ice jam passes........

Added Sunday Ocheyedan River In Osceola County, Iowa A River In Iowa Runs Dry As Water is Pumped To Minnesota........
A 2 mile section of the Ocheyedan River in northwestern Iowa has run dry in the past seven years as a rural water utility has pumped more water from the ground with the approval of state regulators.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that a portion of the Ocheyedan River ran dry in September during the drought conditions and the increased pumping by Osceola County and the Osceola County Rural Water System.
This led to the deaths of a significant number of fish and other aquatic life dying, as well as diminished wildlife in the region and leaving less water for local livestock........

HeartLands Conservancy recently announced the preservation of four properties in Clinton County, Illinois along the Kaskaskia River. This milestone brings the total amount of acres preserved to 10,000 which support farming, wildlife habitat, cultural heritage, community well-being and scenic beauty.
These properties along the Kaskaskia River are being restored to forested wetlands, which will provide crucial habitat for a variety of tropical birds, bats and animals. The four Clinton County properties not only provide habitat for a variety of species, but also maintains water quality in the Kaskaskia River.
HeartLands Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is the preservation and protection of natural resources in southern Illinois. HLC has worked with governmental agencies, private landowners and other partners to restore and protect essential habitats such as wetlands, forests and grasslands........

Illinois River At Kampsville, Illinois Officials Report Kampsville Ferry Has Closed As Well........
Thursday evening, officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that both the Brussels and Kampsville Ferries have ceased operations due to the winter storms.
The Kampsville Ferry made an announcement that the ferry would be closed on Friday because of ice floes in the Illinois River. Officials did not announce a timetable for the ferries resuming service........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri Officials Say "No Signs Of Missing Paraglider"........
On Wednesday, officials reported that despite several days worth of large-scale search and rescue efforts they have yet to recover any signs of Kenny Loudermilk, his belongings or his motorized paraglider.
35 year old Loudermilk was last spotted in the Missouri RIver after his paraglider crashed into the river. Since his disappearance, several crews have participated in the search and rescue efforts.
Corporal Dallas Thompson, a spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol says that there are many scenarios why Loudermilk hasn't resurfaced. It is possible that his parachute is snagged on something or something may be weighing him down......

Illinois River At Brussels, Illinois Winter Storm Closes The Brussels Ferry........
Officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation, District 8 has announced that the Brussels Ferry closed on Thursday evening because of the winter storm.
IDOT suggests that people traveling into or out of the region should consider using the Joe Page Bridge or the Kampsville Ferry to get to and from Calhoun County.
Officials have not given any indications on when the Kampsville Ferry will resume operations........

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri Weather Conditions Close The Dorena-Hickman Ferry........
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry has been shut down due to the winter weather conditions. Winds have increased from about 6 MPH to 20 MPH. Blowing snow has caused poor visibility, which contributed to the shutdown.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry carries traffic over the Mississippi River, linking Missouri Routes A and 77 near Dorena, Missouri with KY 1354 at Hickman, Kentucky. The ferry provides a crucial transportation link between Missouri and Kentucky and also offers convenient access to nearby fishing and recreation areas.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry has been operating on a limited schedule, running Thursday to Monday while they seek a new ferryboat captain. Currently, there is no estimated time for the ferry to resume service. Officials will attempt to provide timely notice when the ferry will resume service........

Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri Dredge Tours Put Spotlight On Their Crews........
The extreme drought conditions and the resulting low water along the Mississippi River has caused a lot of trouble for the river shipping industry, and as a result, dredging crews have been scrambling to keep the Mississippi River's shipping channel open.
On December 14th, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard and the river shipping industry teamed up to recognize the efforts of the dredge crews who worked around the clock to keep the shipping channel open. The message for the crews was what they do matters.
Guests gathered at the foot of Arsenal Street at the St. Louis District Service Base where they boarded the Corps' support vessel, the MV Pathfinder. They toured the St. Louis Harbor prior to heading to the Cargill Terminal in East St. Louis........

Mississippi River Near Dubuque, Iowa River Museum Closed Delta Exhibit After Stingray Deaths........
On Thursday, officials with the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium announced that the Delta in the National River Center has closed until further notice, following the death of eight stingrays.
The announcement came after staff noticed the animals in distress. The Delta exhibit appears to have suffered a malfunction in the life support system, triggering gas-embolisms in the animals.
The Delta exhibit's monitoring system showed a spike in oxygen levels late Wednesday evening, however, the system did not send an alarm notification to staff as expected........

Lake Of The Ozarks Man Drowned After Falling From A Dock........
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Thursday afternoon, an Osage Beach man, identified as 69 year old Dean Guiducci, drowned after falling into the Lake of the Ozarks.
At around 2:20 pm, the Missouri State Highway Patrol was called out to Surdyke Port 20, where Guiducci had reportedly fallen from a dock into the lake. Guiducci was recovered from the water and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 4:04 pm.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that Guiducci was not wearing a life jacket when he fell into the water. Amren reports that the water temperature of the lake on Thursday was about 50 degrees.......

Boat Registration New Boat Registrations Decrease Again.........
During October, new boat registrations in the main powerboat segments continued the downward trend, coming in 23 percent lower than the previous year with 5,577 registrations compared to 7,246 in 2021.
Overall, there were 9,473 new vessel registrations in October 2022, compared with 10,143 registrations in October 2021. Personal watercraft were a bit of an oddity as they were up 61.6 percent over October 2021, with 2,480 registrations compared to 1,535 last year.
Tim McKercher, Sea-Doo media relations manager says that part of the reason for the discrepancy in PWC registrations was that there was no product available in 2021 and the majority of 2022 model year Sea-Doo and Yamaha product was shipped at that time........

Ohio River Near Brookport, Illinois Former Lock and Dam No.52 Property Metropolis-Massac Port Receives Funds For Feasibility Study ........
The state of Illinois recently awarded the Metropolis-Massac Port Authority $1.5 million for a feasibility study that will be conducted once they take possession of the former Lock and Dam No.52 property near Brookport, Illinois.
Metropolis-Massac Port Authority executive director Scott Garrett says that port officials are currently waiting for final documents that will offer guidance in using the funds.
The port authority has existed on paper since 2009 but never possessed any tangible assets. They were awarded the former lock and dam property as part of the 2020 Water Resources and Development Act. No deed of conveyance has yet to be issued, but the final contract for demolition work at the site hasn't been completed........

Lower Mississippi River Corps Approves Permits For Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion........
On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded key permits for Louisiana's proposed $2.5 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, which is designed to reconnect the Mississippi River with the Barataria Basin. The project is expected to create up to 21 square miles of wetlands by 2070.
The record of decision documents include several special conditions that the state will be required to comply with during and after construction. The state is also required to measure the effects of the diversion's operation on fisheries, including endangered species.
The Corps says that the approved environmental permits and a permit allowing the project to impact levees and shipping along the Mississippi River are not an endorsement of the project, but rather a confirmation that the diversion was the least damaging of the seven alternatives considered by the state........

Mississippi River Shipping Traffic Returning With Higher River Levels........
The levels of the Mississippi River south of St. Louis remain low, however, barge traffic is slowly returning the Upper Mississippi River and within the Alton Pool. As of Tuesday morning, river traffic near the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 had increased in both directions.
Back in October, the Mississippi River near New Orleans had fallen to a 30 year low which had restricted river traffic. Dredging the navigation channel has permitted traffic to resume, but limitations on the number of barges in a tow remain.
The Mississippi River does not have a dam system in place to control the depth of the shipping channel south of Granite City, Illinois' Lock and Dam No.27........

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau, the FLOCK Food Truck Park, the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton and the National Great Rivers Museum will be hosting the annual Eagle Ice Festival from 10 am to 2 pm.
Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau says that the Eagle Ice Festival is a great way to kick off eagle season and provides the opportunity to celebrate the return of the American Bald Eagles to the region.
Jobe adds that the Eagle Ice Festival is very popular with visitors and is a chance for people visiting the Alton and Grafton area to enjoy a wide variety of free activities such as seeing a live bald eagle and watching ice carvers in action........

Lower Mississippi River Water Levels Improving ........
Shipping conditions are starting to return to normal along the Lower Mississippi River as rainfall has increased and the Mississippi River's water levels have risen.
At Memphis, Tennessee, the Mississippi River is close to 18 feet higher than the record lows seen in mid-October. A similar rise in river levels is happening along the lower reaches of the Ohio River Valley.
According to USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey, the rainfall within the Mississippi River Valley has gone a long way towards normalizing large operations along the Ohio River and the Lower Mississippi River as well........

Lower Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana Exposed Ferry Remains Slip Back Beneath The Water........
Back in early October, the Lower Mississippi River levels were extremely low, and Patrick Ford spotted what turned out to be the remains of the 107 year old Brookhill Ferry. This week, the rising river has reclaimed the wreck.
According to a 1960 article in The Sunday Advocate, the Brookhill Ferry joined the Baton Rouge ferry fleet to carry traffic across the Mississippi River in 1895 as the night ferry.
On the night of September 29, 1915, a hurricane blew in from the Gulf of Mexico, causing the Brookhill Ferry to sink at it's mooring near the docks........
