Illinois River At Beardstown, Illinois

Beardstown Prepping For A New Illinois River Bridge........

Officials report that a new bridge carrying U.S. 67 across the Illinois River at Beardstown, Illinois is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.  According to Beardstown Mayor Tim Harris, the new span will be a considerable improvement and they are pleased that the project is poised to begin.

Harris says that construction is expected to begin around this time next year.  The new bridge will be located approximately 150 feet downstream from the current bridge.

The current span was built in 1955 and rehabilitated in 1985.  It is 28 feet wide and it's two lanes carries around 6,500 vehicles across the Illinois River each day.  The new bridge will still be two lanes, but it will be 44 feet wide and will feature two 12 foot wide lanes and 2 10 foot shoulders........

    River History....

July 9, 2009 in River History

The Army Corps of Engineers announced the completion of the closing of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet on this day in 2009.

The channel was built in the 1960s to provide a shipping shortcut from the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. It was blamed for the loss of thousands of acres of protective wetlands over the years and many elected officials and residents of the area loudly blamed the waterway for the massive flooding that decimated the region after Hurricane Katrina.

The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet was blocked by dumping 352,000 tons of rock into the waterway at a cost of $11.2 million. Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Co. of Arkansas spent six months to build the barrier. The barrier stretches 950 feet across the MRGO channel, and has a 12-foot top crown, a 450-foot bottom width, and stands 7 feet above the water level.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Dive Bell To Protect Electrical Infrastructure During Floods........

When living along the banks of a major river, there is one thing that is pretty much guaranteed:  the river will at some point rise out of it's banks and flood the town.  Hannibal's new riverfront was designed with that fact in mind.

When the Mississippi River is on the way up, there are many components of Hannibal's renovated riverfront that can be removed ahead of time.  There are some structures that are not mobile, such as the large electrical panels located east of Hannibal's downtown floodwall.

Andy Dorian, Hannibal's director of central services says that there is a large dome that will sit over the electrical panels.  Called the "Dive Bell", it is designed to not flood.  It will be put to the test during the next major flooding event........

Missouri River Runoff Improves, Drought Remains........

While the month of June saw some significant rainfall within the upper Yellowstone River Basin, the drought conditions along the Upper Missouri River basin improved.  The drought conditions remain, however.

The Missouri River Mainstem Master Water Control Manual directs the Corps to measure water storage in the Mississippi RIver reservoir system each July 1.  They use that information to determine the level of navigation support available for the remainder of the navigation season.

John Remus, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that this year, the navigation flow support service level will increase slightly and the navigation season will be shortened by three days........

Iowa State Landscape Architecture Students Assist In Proposed Wildlife Bridge Project........

Iowa State University landscape architecture students are working on what may one day be the longest wildlife bridge in the world.  The Bison Bridge Project is an effort to repurpose the old Interstate 80 Mississippi River Bridge linking Le Claire and Rapids City, Illinois as opposed to demolishing it.

One lane is slated to be retrofitted into a wildlife crossing, including a small herd of American bison that the Bison Bridge Foundation intends to steward.  the other land would be used as a pedestrian viewing area and park safely distanced from the wildlife.

Tom Neppl, associate professor of practice in landscape architecture recently asked Chad Pregracke, founder and president of Living Lands and Waters, and leader of the Bison Bridge Project to talk to his students about the project.  Pregracke was so impressed with the students, he decided that he would like to get them involves in the Bison Bridge Project........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

TikTok Shows Father/Son Duo Cooking With Mississippi River Water........

St. Louis resident Doug Weaver and his son recently headed down to the riverfront to collect a jar full of water from the Mississippi River so they could follow a recipe they found on Wayne Shen's TikTok page.  Shen's TikTok recipes are known for their use of quirky directions and ingredients.

Weaver advised his viewers that they had thoroughly boiled the water prior to adding it to their sweet and sour chicken recipe.  Weaver is no stranger to using water from dubious sources, as he and his wife had worked in Rwanda for several years as Peace Corps volunteers.

The National Park Service, however, cautions the public on using Mississippi River water, as some parts of the river exceeds water quality standards for mercury, bacteria, sediment and other contaminants that can make the water dangerous for fishing, swimming and drinking........

Tourists Come From All Over To Cruise The Celebration Belle........

For those looking for the best way to explore the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities region, they should look no further than a cruise aboard the Celebration Belle riverboat.

According to Susan Yarolem, director of sales and marketing, tourists come by the busload from all over the United States.  She added that they have coaches from all over, from Florida, New York, from the East and West Coasts and the Midwest.

The Celebration Belle is a former riverboat casino and had to be remodeled to fit the cruise line's needs.  Captain Jeremy Kerr says that passengers are aboard a theme boat, very reminiscent of something that Mark Twain would have been aboard........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Hannibal's Lover's Leap To Become A Feature Movie........

This month, one of Hannibal's popular sightseeing spots, Lover's Leap overlooking the Mississippi River will be making it's big-screen debut at the Bluff City Theater.

The movie, entitled Lovers Leap was written and directed by LA physician turned filmmaker, Jeffrey Tipton.  He says that the film is best described as Romeo and Juliet meets Ozark.

The film is not a documentary, but rather a story inspired by the tragic legend and beauty of Lovers Leap.  The plot will not follow the storyline of the Hannibal legend, but does include twists and turns to intertwine the local legend........

Despite Improved Runoff During June, Missouri River Basin Still In Drought........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that despite improved runoff during June, water conservation measures will continue for the second half of the navigation flow support season.

June runoff into the Missouri RIver basin above Sioux City, Iowa was 5.2 million acre-feet, or 94 percent of average.  The revised 2022 runoff forecast is 20.0 MAF, or  78 percent of average.  The June runoff into Garrison was 110 percent of average.

John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that heavy rainfall in mid-June into the Upper Yellowstone River coincided with increased mountain snowmelt increased inflows into the Garrison Reservoir........

Mississippi River Journeys

Man Paddling and Pedaling Down The Mississippi River........

Robin Garwood of St. Paul, Minnesota says that he has always wanted to paddle the Mississippi River and on May 30, he took off in his canoe from Lake Itasca.  On July 7th, he passed through the Quad Cities.

Garwood says that he had expected the trip to be difficult, and it has been difficult.  He adds that the trip involves a lot more work than he believed he was setting himself up for.

He has run into some challenges while paddling the Mississippi River, most notably passing through the locks.  At Lock and Dam No.6 near Trempealeau, Wisconsin, he was basically pushed into the lock chamber by a strong tailwind.  The wind had pushed him past the rope dangling along the wall and he had to shout to the lock staff for assistance.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Suspected Boat Thief Caught Adrift On The Lake........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that last weekend, an attempted boat theft was dead in the water when the alleged thief could not get the boat to start.

On the evening of July 4th, Chad Kautz was with some friends at Dog Days Bar & Grill near the mouth of the Glaize Arm, when one of them pointed out a Sea Ray identical to his leaving the docks.  Seeing as Sea Rays are common on the lake, he didn't give it much thought.

When Kautz and his crew were set to leave, they found the boat in the slip facing the wrong direction.  Two men approached the group and asked if the boat belonged to Kautz, who confirmed it was.  They then asked Kautz if he was aware the boat had been stolen.

The MSHP reports that the alleged thief was Mario Sanchez of Appleton, Wisconsin.  He has been charged with BWI, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance (less than 10 grams of marijuana) and 2nd degree tampering.

Reportedly, Sanchez tried to steal the boat, couldn't get the boat to start, and the vessel started drifting down the cove.  A bystander jumped into the water, swam to the boat to stop Sanchez and secured the vessel back to the dock.,.......

Lake Mead Near Las Vegas, Nevada

Boaters Head To Lake Mead Despite Low Water Levels........

Boating is alive and well on Lake Mead, despite reports to the contrary.  Lake Mead is the nation's largest man-made reservoir, even though it is currently at 30 percent capacity due to the ongoing drought.

According to Bruce Nelson, director of operations at Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina, their business is full.  He adds that low water levels have made the marina operations more valuable because people do not want to deal with launch ramps.

Both Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina are floating facilities, and as the water levels fall, they can pull up the anchors and winch the marina out to it's new location........

Hi Bill,

Thought this picture is worth a thousand words. Captain Bill Nichols of the Chrissy Shell is taking his turn at cleaning the mud off the road in front of his boat at Woodland. We have been using snow shovels as well as pumping water from the river to try and clear the mud off the road. Sorry to say most of the harbors equipment was lost in the flood. We are determined to get things done at our harbor.

Low Water Prompts Vehicle Size Restrictions On The Ferry........

Low water along the Mississippi River has caused the Dorena-Hickman Ferry to temporarily exclude tractor-trailer rigs and vehicles pulling trailers until further notice.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says that low water levels along the Mississippi River has caused an issue with the angle of the ferry landing ramp in Hickman Harbor and at the Missouri landing.  Reportedly, some vehicles with trailers have been hanging on the ramp.

As of July 27th, the gauge at Cairo, Illinois was reported at 18 feet.  It is expected to remain below that level for at least a week or until there is substantial rainfall upstream........

Mississippi River In Illinois

Illinois Has Longest Mississippi River Border, River Utilized The Least........

As far as Illinois is concerned, the Mississippi River is considered to be a backwater, despite the fact that the state has more Mississippi River than another state.

Most of the state's population is centered around Lake Michigan and the largest city along the Mississippi River is Moline, which only has a population of just under 42,000.

Authors that wrote about the Mississippi River have not given Illinois much attention either.  In Life on the Mississippi, Mark Twain does mention Chester as the location of a penitentiary, and in 1863, he noted that Cairo has a heavy rail and river trade and being located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers would help the town prosper.  That ended up not being the case........

A Look Back At The Opening, Re-Opening Of The Eads Bridge........

On July 4, 1874, an estimated 200,000 spectators turned out to the Mississippi Riverfront at St. Louis to officially "christen the scientific feat of the century", the Eads Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois.

Fast-forward to July 4, 2003, hundreds of people lined the upper deck of the Eads Bridge for it's reopening dedication.  The span had been closed for more than 11 years for repairs.

Man Drowns After Jumping Into The River........

At around 4 pm Monday evening, 25 year old Uriel P. Ramirez of Collinsville, Illinois died after jumping from a rockface into the Meramec River east of Sullivan, Missouri.

According to a preliminary report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Ramirez was pronounced dead at 5:30 pm at Meramec State Park, downstream from a boat ramp there.

The Patrol adds that Ramirez jumped from a rockface that was about 10 feet high, but didn't resurface in time.  Bystanders were not able to rescue him.  They said he resurfaced a few times, and then they didn't see him again........

Teen Reels In A Catch Of A Lifetime........

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reports that this past week, 15 year old Edwards Tarumianz went fishing and caught an incredibly rare fish, Guide Richard Simms said that he had never seen anything like it in all his 30 years of catfishing.

Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency posted photos of Tarumianz and his catch, likely a white and pink piebald catfish.  TWRA officials say that this catch is a neat and rare catch for anglers and biologists alike.

There are three potential categories explaining why the fish does not have color:

○  Albino: no pigment in skin and hair, leaving both white and eyes usually pink.
○  Leucism: reduced pigmentation, identified by overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring.
○  Piebald: having irregular patches of two colors.

Upper Missouri River Basin

Missouri River Water:  Officials Say Use It Or Lose It........

An official is concerned that other states, including areas impacted by the western megadrought are showing interest in diverting water from the Missouri River and that North Dakota is risking the loss of it's water permits if it is too slow in securing it's claims.

According to Duane DeKrey, the manager of the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District, who is overseeing the $1.3 billion Red River Valley Water Supply Project, that risk, as well as inflation are among the reasons he is calling for speeding up the project, which would carry water from he Missouri River to the Red River Valley.

The project is on a 20 to 30 year construction schedule at this time, with a cost projection of $1.3 billion in 2022 dollars.  DeKrey is calling on legislators to approve a six year building schedule, which will require a state investment of $300 to $400 million per two year budget cycle........

Asian Carp Update

Illinois Chefs Getting Creative With Copi Cakes........

While Copi is the new name for the fish formerly known as Asian carp, chefs across Illinois are currently working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in an effort to make the invasive species a staple food.

Kevin Irons with the IDNR says that eradicating the Asian carp is not likely, however, harvesting them can be a tool for controlling their populations where they are dominating and preventing their spread.

Emily Hurd, owner of the Norwegian restaurant in Rockford, Illinois, says that they are doing a trial run of Copi cakes to see if the public likes them.  Hurd adds that they won't give up on Copi if the Copi cake doesn't work out.  She adds that they like a challenge........

Ohio River Journeys

Naval Officer Paddling For Parkinson's Cure........

There is no cure for Parkinson's disease, however, a Naval officer is attempting to change that by kayaking the length of the Ohio River and raising money along the way.

Taylor Dewy is on the final leg of his 32 day journey, which will end in Cairo, Illinois.  He takes on some sort of adventure every year while on leave from the Navy.  Dewey has paddled and biked his way across the entire nation.

Dewey says that paddling is a great way to convene with nature and relax.  This trip is about more than recreation, as Dewey is raising funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research........

Missouri River At Boonville, Missouri

Take A Look At Missouri's Bridge To Nowhere........

There are a wide variety of odd and interesting attractions to be found all across the state of Missouri, but perhaps one of the most unique is the bridge to nowhere partially spanning the Missouri River at Boonville, Missouri.

The Katy Bridge is formally known as the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Bridge and was completed in 1932.  Over it's life it served the railroad industry until the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad shut down in 1986.  By 2004, the U.S. Coast Guard deemed the span to be a hazard and ordered it to be demolished.

While Union Pacific officials have determined that the best way to deal with the span is to dismantle it, community members have been working to save the span and expand it so that it can become part of the 240 mile long Katy Trail........

Boating Safety

A Few Tips For Safe Refueling........

Most people don't give much thought to filling up the gas tank, however, refueling as boat forces one to consider things unseen and take the appropriate preventative actions.

The key takeaway should be that the liquid gasoline is not the greatest risk, but the unseen vapors generated by the fuel being moved, poured or jostled.  The best way to combat these vapors is to use the blower.  LakeExpo.com has put together a short safe fueling checklist to keep you safe at the gas dock........

Safe Refueling Checklist
1. Secure boat to the dock.
2. Shut off the engine(s).
3. Remove all passengers from the boat.
4. Locate your fire extinguisher and make sure it’s operable and accessible
5. Put out any open flames (no smoking and make sure the BBQ grill on the rail are cold).
6. Don’t use electrical switches while fueling. Some people feel you should shut off the stereo and other electrical devices.
7. Determine and use the proper type of fuel.
8. Be certain you are putting fuel in fuel tank (not the holding or fresh water or even the rod holder)
9. Always fuel slowly and don’t overfill.
10. If you have a blower, turn it on at least for four minutes (some people think that’s too long but that’s the recommended time). Some people like to open the engine compartment to release any fumes.
11. Do the sniff test and see if you smell fumes.
12. DO NOT start engine(s) until all fumes are gone.

Troy, Missouri native Cheyenne Haynes recently caught an 82 pound catfish from the Missouri Rive3r.  She says that the fish took approximately 20 minutes to reel in.

Following the catch, Haynes posed for a few quick photos with her fish and then released it back into the river........

Ohio River Near Washington, West Virginia

One Dead In Ohio River Boating Accident........

The authorities report that on Friday afternoon, the body of one person was recovered from the Ohio River after a pleasure craft was struck by a barge near Washington, West Virginia.

According to Captain Taylor Sams with the Blennerhassell Volunteer Fire Department, a boat was towing another when a thunderstorm came through.  The storm reduced visibility and caused the river to become choppy.

A commercial barge came into the area and was unable to see the smaller boat and ended up striking one.  Several people jumped from the boat when the collision occurred, and all but one were recovered without injury........

RIAC Provides L&D 25 Update, Talks Barge/Rail Safety........

Last week, members of the River Industry Action Committee, tow company captains, Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers met in St. Louis to hear the latest updates on Lock and Dam No.25 and to offer industry input on ways to avoid barge/rail incidents.

The first meeting with Coast Guard officials and rail representatives stemmed from an incident in November when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train collided with a barge that impinged on a railway track where multiple coal cars overturned, some went into the Mississippi River, and two diesel locomotives derailed.

Another topic discussed was the Lock and Dam No.25 project, which recently received full funding of $723 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act under the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability program.........

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is urging all mariners to be safe on the water during the Fourth of July weekend.

During the holiday, increased traffic on the water is expected. Coast Guard stations around the country will be on patrol to ensure safety and security on the water, but the Coast Guard reminds boaters that safety starts at the dock.

The Coast Guard wants boaters to remember these tips before leaving the dock:

Always check the local weather before heading out. Weather can change rapidly, so mariners planning on getting underway should keep a watchful eye on the forecast conditions.
Make sure a friend or relative knows your float plan. A float plan states where you are going and how many people are aboard your vessel. It also gives a vessel description, details your destination and what time you expect to arrive there. If you are delayed for some reason, make sure you let someone know.
Obtain a free, no-fault vessel safety check from your local Coast Guard Auxiliary before heading out on the water. Safety checks are courtesy examinations of your vessel designed to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations.
Do not drink and boat. According to the 2021 recreational boating statistics, alcohol use was the leading known contributing factor for fatalities which resulted in a total of 86 deaths, and contributed to 247 accidents and 186 injuries nationwide.
Do not use flares as fireworks. Flares are a recognized sign of distress.
Equip your vessel with working communication equipment. A VHF-FM radio is the best method of communication while on the water. Although cell phones are a good backup, they can be unreliable due to gaps in coverage area and battery life.
Don’t allow friends and family members to bow-ride. Bow-riding refers to the unsafe practice of passengers remaining on the bow of a recreational vessel while it is making way.
Wear your life jacket! In 2021, where cause of death was known, 81% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 83% were not wearing a life jacket. In an emergency, there might not be enough time to put one on, so wearing one at all times may save your life.

Harbor Boat Raised After Sinking........

On Saturday, June 25th, Josh Bradshaw and Erik Watson were out on the Illinois River near downtown Iowa on their personal watercraft, when they spotted the 50 foot harbor boat Midwest I sinking.  They ended up rescuing two men, identified as Captain Dick Hamm and his grandson.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi reports that the Midwest I was assisting a recreational vessel that had run aground.  While moving southbound on the river, the vessel capsized while turning to starboard in 25 knot winds and 4 to 5 foot seas.

The vessel sank in 18.3 feet of water and was laying on it's side with 6 feet of water over it's highest point when it was raised.  The Midwest I was raised on June 27 using equipment provided by the owner-operator Captain Hamm........

A Bit of River history

Mississippi River History

Cairo, Illinois And The Construction Of The Eads Bridge........

Cairo, Illinois is located at the southern-most point of Illinois, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.  The town was founded in 1818, it became the terminus for the Illinois Central Railroad in 1855, and in September 1861, the Union Army established the naval station for the Mississippi River Squadron.

James Buchanan Eads was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1820, and he relocated to St. Louis in 1833.  In 1842 Eads became a partner in a salvage business working in the Mississippi River from Iowa to New Orleans.  He developed a "diving bell" that allowed him to work on the river bottom.

Eads would continue his salvage work for the Union Army, recovering sunken war vessels and material during the Civil War.  During this time, he learned how the river could scour rocks and determined that the riverbed was made up of layers of mud and sand on top of blue shale and the bedrock.

Following the Civil War, St. Louis wanted a railroad bridge across the Mississippi River in order to connect to the increasing rail traffic.  Ead's experience at Cairo would become crucial to his proposal being adopted, resulting in the Eads Bridge, which still stands today........

July 1927 in River History

Construction began on the old Clark Bridge in July 1927.
The bridge crossed the Mississippi River at Alton, IL and was down river from the old Alton Lock and Dam...

The bridge was demolished in the summer / fall of 1994.

The old Clark Bridge had the infamous turn on the Illinois side. Click here for pic from the Alton Web

A Bit of Mississippi River Racing History

The Robert E. Lee Beat The Natchez In An 1870 Race........

On July 4, 1870, the steamboat Robert E. Lee steamed into the St. Louis, Missouri riverfront at 11:25 am, winning a race with the steamboat Natchez from New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Lee completed the journey in three days, 18 hours and 20 or so minutes.  This remained the standard for the gaudy, dangerous and short era of the Mississippi River steamboats.

The race began just after 5 pm on June 30th.  The Lee was 14 minutes ahead of the Natchez upon arriving at Natchez, Mississippi.  The lead extended to 59 minutes by the time the Lee reached Memphis, Tennessee.........

Contract Approved For Cave-In-Rock Ferry........

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently announced that the Cave-in-Rock Ferry will continue operating with a new two-year contract.  The KYTC says that the contract will keep the ferry running on a regular schedule from 6 am to 10 pm daily.

The Cave-in-Rock Ferry links KY Highway 91 in Crittenden County, Kentucky and Illinois Route 1 in Hardin County, Illinois.  The ferry carries some 500 vehicles across the Ohio River each day.

The contract provides $3,324,000 for the ferry through June 30, 2024.  The ferry is jointly funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet via the Ohio River Ferry Authority operated by the Crittenden County Fiscal Court,,,,,,,,
