Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Riverview Drive Project Making Progress........
Alton officials are pleased with the progress being made on the Riverview Drive Soil Stabilization Project during the winter months. Mike Parsons, Alton's Public Works Director says that the winter weather has been mild, allowing for continuous work.
Parsons says that the work is continuing on the Riverview Soil Stabilization Project. He adds that GSI of Denver, Colorado was awarded the contract for the project by FEMA. To date, considerable progress is being made overall.
Parsons stated that there are two phases for the project, with phase one involving stabilization of the bluffs in the Riverview area. Once stabilized, phase two can commence, which will involve reconstructing Riverview Drive to address irrigation concerns........

The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center will be hosting Illinois RiverWatch during their next Neighbor Nights event, which will be held on January 17th.
This month's Neighbor Nights event will feature the premier of Illinois RiverWatch's film, Biodiversity of Freshwater Mussels: Community Science in Action.
Danielle Haake, RiverWatch Director and Stream Ecologist says that the film is intended to demystify the overall process of scientific research. She adds that they also want to demonstrate that community science projects are for everyone and no experience in science is necessary to participate........

Mississippi River Near St. Charles County, Missouri A Portion Of The Mississippi River Froze Solid During Last Month's Bomb Cyclone........
During the recent bomb cyclone, a section of the Mississippi River east of St. Charles County appeared to have frozen solid. Dan Zarlenga, media specialist with the Missouri Department of Conservation snapped some photos of the frozen Mississippi River at sunset........

Mississippi River Near Luling, Louisiana Existing River Diversion May Offer Lessons Applicable To Upcoming Project.......
Researchers are looking to the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion project in search of lessons it may contain relating to the upcoming Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project.
The Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion has been open for a few decades and demonstrates the Mississippi River's land building capabilities, as well as the ability to slow erosion.
The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion will certainly dwarf the Davis Pond project. It is expected to build around 21 square miles of land by 2070........

Illinois Fishing News Thousands Turn Out For Fishing Show........
Over the weekend, nearly 10,000 people headed out to the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, Illinois for the 29th annual Let's Go Fishing show. The show featured more than 100 exhibitors selling fishing gear, guide services and destinations.
Many of the exhibitors manufacture their own fishing gear or offer fishing lessons to interested anglers. During the show. officials announced tha two new fishing tournaments would be held in the Riverbend this year.
The first new show will be the SeaArk Catfish Tournament, which is scheduled for March 3 - 5, 2023 in Alton. A bass fishing competition,, the Fishers of Men Tournament Series, is scheduled for September 12 0 16, 2023 in Grafton.........

Duck Boat News 3 Face Charges In 2018 Duck Boat Sinking........
The three men charged in the deaths of 17 people in the 2018 sinking of a duck boat on Table Rock Lake will be returning to court this week. Captain Kenneth Scott McKee and two supervisors, Curtis Lanham and Charles Baltzell will be attending preliminary hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Last April, the original charges against the three men were dropped by Stone County Judge Alan Blankenship, who ruled that the unique characteristics of the duck boat led to it's rapid sinking. He also said that the crew was aware of the storm, but there was no evidence that they were aware of the storm's "gust front". Two days later, the Missouri Attorney General's Office refiled 63 criminal charges against the three employees of the former Ride the Ducks attraction.
On July 19, 2018, Stretch Duck 7 with 31 passengers aboard capsized and sank in stormy conditions on Table Rock Lake. 16 passengers, including 9 members of the same family, and one crew member that had been piloting the boat drowned that night, resulting in one of the deadliest boating accidents in United States history........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri How The Gateway Arch Officially Became A National Park........
As of February 23, 2018, the Gateway Arch became the 60th national park in the United States. The National Park Service says that additions to their system are typically made by Congress, however, the president has the authority to designate national park status to monuments on lands under federal jurisdiction.
The Gateway Arch National Park not only includes the Arch itself, but the surrounding grounds, the museum under the monument, as well as the Gateway Arch Riverboats that offer narrated tours of the Mississippi River. The park has the distinction of being the smallest national park in the U.S., at only 91 acres.
The Gateway Arch is a 630 foot tall stainless steel arch located along the Mississippi River on the St. Louis riverfront. It is the tallest man-made monument in the nation. It is an iconic emblem of the city of St. Louis and is a memorial to the westward expansion of the United States........

Kaskaskia River Near Carlyle, Illinois A Look Back At How Carlyle Lake Came To Be........
Carlyle Lake is a man-made lake in Clinton County, Illinois, which was constructed as part of the greater Mississippi River and Tributaries Project. The project was intended to control flooding and improve navigation throughout the region.
The lake was created by damming the Kaskaskia River at Carlyle, Illinois, which is about 107 miles from the river's confluence with the Mississippi River. The Dam West Levee impounds the lake. At normal pool levels, Carlyle Lake covers some 26,000 acres and is 15 miles long and 3.5 miles wide.
Carlyle Lake was created in response to the frequent flooding of the Kaskaskia River in Clinton COunty. In 1933, local residents formed the Kaskaskia RIver Valley Project to study the physical, social and economic impacts of the Kaskaskia River throughout Illinois........

Lake Of The Ozarks The "Miami Vice" Era Puts Powerboating, LOTO On The Map........
During the early 1980s a new television show called Miami Vice hit the airwaves, and with it's prominent featuring of powerboats cutting V's across Miami's Biscayne Bay, ushered in a new era in powerboating across the nation and especially at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Despite the poor economy present for part of the decade, technology was making leaps and bounds forward on the water, with propulsion and hull innovations increasing the speed of boats dramatically.
As boats went faster, boaters and the water patrol felt the need to channel that new-found speed into a controlled environment. Emergency service personnel and a couple of visionaries put together an official event that would eventually become the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout........

The eagle watching season is upon us in the St. Louis region, which prompted hundreds of eagle lovers to head for Alton on Saturday to revel in all things American Bald Eagle.
This time of year, the Riverbend region is among the best places to see eagles in the continental United States. The open water along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers make for an enticing spot for eagles to stop on their annual migration south.
On Saturday, the arrival of the eagles was celebrated in the Riverbend with the annual Alton Eagle Ice Festival, where attendees headed out on eagle watching hikes and tours, listened to nature talks and watched ice carvers in action........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Responders Detonate Hand Grenade Found On The Riverfront........
Washington Police Department spokesperson Lieutenant Steve Sitzes reports that just before 3 pm on January 1st, a MK 2 hand grenade was discovered in the mud along the Washington riverfront near the Washington Boat Club.
Sitzes says that it is not uncommon for this to happen. He adds that they seem to get these calls after Grandpa passes away and he had been in the military and had brought a grenade home from the war.
THe grenade would have been in the water, but since the river level is so low, it was exposed. Due to it's condition, responders were unable to determine it's condition. They decided to bury it with an explosive charge, which was detonated to render the grenade safe........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Mercury Marine Introduced The Avator 7.5e Outboard.......
Mercury Marine recently introduced the Mercury Avator 7.5e electric outboard during the Consumer Electronics Show 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Avator is the first in a series of electric outboard engines to be introduced throughout 2023. Mercury will also be displaying concepts for their Avator 20e and 35e outboards, which will hit the market later this year.
Chris Drees, president of Mercury Marine says that they are excited to introduce the 7.5e electric outboard to the world........

Missouri Boat Ramp MDC Warns Boaters To Beware On Public Boat Ramps Due To Low Water........
The Missouri Department of Conservation is recommending that the public use caution when using MDC boat accesses in locations where water levels are low as some boat ramps have been damaged by the low water.
The notable locations where water levels are low are along the Missouri River and around the Lake of the Ozarks.
John George, MDC Central Regional Resource Management Supervisor says that the water levels have been low near the ends of the ramps, so when boats are loaded back onto trailers, the propeller wash excavates a hole below the ramp.
As a result, boat trailers have been damaged when their tires drop into those holes. MDC workers are working to fill in the holes........

I wanted to let you know that Tip Trindle passed away this past Saturday evening. I know you and many others were friends of his at Woodland and all over the river. Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Crews Begin Work On Melvin Price Lock Overlooks........
On January 3rd, the main lock at Melvin Price Locks and Dam was closed as crews from Alberici Constructors Inc. began a project involving the demolition and reconstruction of two observation structures that hang over both sides of the lock chamber.
This work is preparatory to the replacement of the lock's lift gate, which will be taken care of either next winter or the following winter. That will be the first lift gate replacement for the lock, which was completed in 1989 and is one of the newer lock and dam projects along the Mississippi River.
Doug Engle, general manager of marine construction with Alberici says that this is a cool project for them as it offers the opportunity to perform this complex building renovation over a waterway........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri Update: Search Continues For Man Last Seen Aboard Ice Chunk........
The search 34 year old Aaron Duenke is continuing after he went missing on December 27, 2022. He was last spotted riding on a chunk of ice along the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri.
Volunteers have been searching up and down the Missouri River, eastward to Howell Island at Chesterfield, Missouri, Pelican Island and on to the Confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
A helicopter has been used in Duenke's search and the Boles Fire Protection District, Wright City Fire Department and the Monarch Fire Protection District used elaborate drones in the search with no success.........

Boat Show News The Fort Myers Boat Show Has Begun........
On Thursday, the Fort Myers Boat Show opened and will be running through Sunday at the Caloosa Sound Convention Center as well as the surrounding area.
The Fort Myers Boat Show was originally scheduled for November, however, it was postponed after Hurricane Ian tore across Florida. There are no in-water displays, as City Yacht Basin was extensively damaged and remains closed.
Some of the exhibitors that had planned to display boats in the water are now featuring displays on land. Exhibitors with larger boats have booths in the convention center........

Upcoming Events Mississippi River In The Riverbend Bald Eagle Days Programs Returning To The Region........
With the arrival of winter time and chillier temperatures to the Riverbend region, the American bald eagles also arrive to take up their winter roosts. The majestic birds can be seen in the trees along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers from December through March.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Pere Marquette
State Park will be hosting Bald Eagle Days programs at Pere
Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois. There will be 14
different Eagle Days sessions offered through March.
Each program will start at 8:30 am at the Pere Marquette State
Park Visitor's Center and will feature a video presentation and
program followed up by an observational drive to view the
wintering eagles. The Bald Eagle Days tours will be held
on:

I wanted to let you know that Tip Trindle passed away this past Saturday evening. I know you and many others were friends of his at Woodland and all over the river. Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois The Eagle Ice Festival Will Be Held Saturday........
American Bald Eagles have begun arriving in the Riverbend, just in time for the Alton Eagle Ice Festival on Saturday. The event will run from 10 am to 2 pm.
The Alton Eagle Ice Festival will feature activities at the Flock food truck park, the National Great Rivers Museum and the Audubon Center in the Wetlands.
Several eagles have returned to the region to winter here and on Saturday, there will be tours of the best spots to see them available........

Illinois Fishing News Let's Go Fishing Show This Weekend........
This weekend, the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, Illinois will be hosting the Let's Go Fishing Show, which has been a Metro East tradition for almost three decades. The show usually draws in between 8,000 and 10,000 in attendance.
Show attendees will be able to check out the latest fishing equipment and services from over 100 exhibitors, including fishing tackle, bait, rods and reels, electronics and a variety of fishing boats from local dealers.
Jamie Lane, the Let's Go Fishing Show producer says that there will be free seminars throughout the weekend. There will also be plenty of kid's activities such as a free fishing pond and live animal exhibits.
The show will run from 11 am to 8 pm Friday, Saturday, from 9 am to 7 pm and Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri Update: Search For Missing Floater Continues.........
On December 27th, Aaron Duenke was last seen floating along the Missouri River near Washington, Missouri atop of a large slab of ice. He had been filmed and photographed by many people who spotted him riding the river.
Unfortunately, this was the last time Duenke was seen. On Wednesday, Duenke's brother Chris said that he does not believe that there is any chance that Aaron will be found alive.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop C is heading up the search efforts. Public Information Officer Corporal Logan Bolton says that the search for Aaron continues, however, there is nothing new to report........

Mississippi River Near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri Despite Possible Body Sighting, No Body Located........
According to a spokesperson for the Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff's Department, on Tuesday afternoon, a barge worker reported seeing a "body or something else entirely" floating in the Mississippi River near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.
Officials report that several search teams have scoured the area of the Mississippi River that the barge worker reported possibly seeing a body. The search team found no evidence of a body in the water.
The Sheriff's Department spokesperson states that they did not discover of locate a body, and as of Wednesday, the two-day search effort has been called off........

Ohio River At Cave-In-Rock, Illinois The Cave-In-Rock Ferry Reopened Wednesday........
Wednesday evening, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reopened the Cave-In-Rock Ferry, which links KY 91 with Illinois Route 1 across the Ohio River.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry had closed earlier on Wednesday because of high wind speeds. The KTC reports that by about 4 pm, wind speeds had fallen enough for the ferry to safely operate. Service resumed at around 4:30 pm........

Mississippi And Ohio River Levels Rainfall Raises River Levels Across The Heartland.......
Following this weeks rainfall, both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers are expected to rise several feet .
The National Weather Service in Paducah forecasted the Mississippi River to rise just over one foot to 8.49 feet as of 9 am Tuesday morning. The Mississippi River is expected to rise throughout the week, cresting at 10.2 feet by next Tuesday.
The Ohio River is also on the rise, jumping nearly two feet on the Paducah gauge to 17.11 feet as of 9 am Tuesday morning. The NWS is forecasting that the Ohio River will crest at 21.8 feet on Monday, January 9th........

Maritime History Along The English Coastline 16th Century Vessel Remains Unearthed By Quarry Workers........
Officials from Wessex Archaeology report that last year, quarry workers unearthed the remains of a rare 16th century vessel along the English Coastline. The vessel was discovered about a quarter mile from the current coiastline.
Archaeologists say that very few English-built 16th century vessels survived, making the find a rare discovery from what is an interesting period of time in the history of seafaring.
The wooden remains are very important because they allow for a broader understanding of trade and shipbuilding during the Elizabethan era, which spanned from 1558 to 1603.
Archaeologists say that the period was transitional for shipbuilding, as shipwrights were believed to have shifted from the traditional building methods observed in Viking vessels to a multi-phase process where internal framing was constructed first........

More Information The Steamboat Arabia Arabia Museum's Future Is Uncertain After St. Charles Deal Fell Through.......
After a deal to relocate The Steamboat Arabia Museum from Kansas City to St. Charles fell through, the future of the museum remains uncertain. The museum's current lease is up in 2026 and there are no plans to renew it.
A part of the reason that the deal fell through is that museum owner David Hawley intends to dig up an other steamboat, the Malta, which sank before the Arabia in 1841. It is currently buried under a Saline County field approximately 90 minutes east of Kansas City.
Hawley pitched the deal to St. Charles officials in 2022, signing a letter of intent to construct a museum for both steamboats. The deal fell apart last month. Hawley claims that he would have had to sell half of his collection to make it work.
St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer says that he never told Hawley he would have to sell off the collection. Instead, the asking price of $10 million for the Arabia collection and another 3 million for excavating the Malta would be too much........

Mississippi River Shipping Businesses Hope Rainfall Makes Up For Drought........
As more rain is expected across the Mid-South, many say that it is needed to make up for several months of drought.
Joe Weiss, general manager of the Mud Island Marina says that rain is is needed as it helps keep the water up and not causing damage to boats. Weiss adds that they need the water levels to rise again, as the constantly changing river levels have been challenging for business.
Weiss notes that the water went up, went back down, went up, went back down. He said that the water level is now about a negative three or four which places the water at the end of the ramp, so it isn't usable........

Ohio River Near Dayton, Kentucky 1 Dead, 1 Critically Injured In Boat Fire.......
Shortly after 11 am Friday morning, one person was killed and another seriously injured following a boat fire in a marina along the Ohio River.
Bellevue-Dayton Fire Chief Chris Adkins says that fire crews were called out for reports of a boat fire at the Manhattan Harbor marina in Dayton, Kentucky.
Adkins reports that upon arrival, responders found two vessels, a cabin cruiser and a houseboat on fire. Responders found one person in the water and that a second person was still aboard one of the boats. That person was pronounced dead at the scene........

Upcoming Events January 7, 2023 Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois The Alton Eagle Ice Festival Is Next Weekend........
On Saturday, January 7th, from 10 am to 2 pm, the FLOCK Food Truck Park, National Greta Rivers Museum and the Audubon Center at Riverlands will be hosting the Alton Eagle Ice Festival.
Events will include the free Eagle Meet & Greet at the FLOCK Food Truck Park, food trucks, drinks, DJ tunes, ice carvers, Eagle Fest Beer, fire pits, s'mores and much more.
The National Great Rivers Museum will offer eagle films, talks from eagle experts, spotting scopes and eagle crafts. The Audubon Center at Riverlands will allow visitors to view other birds of prey including eagles and owls from the TreeHouse Wildlife Center........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee Ski Freeze Hit The Mississippi River For The 46th Year........
On New Years Day, dozens of people braved the icy waters of the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee for the 46th Ski Freeze.
All of the proceeds from the Ski Freeze event benefit The Dream Factory, which is a non-profit that grants the wishes of chronically ill children in the Mid-South.
The Dream Factory says that they typically bring in about $25,000 for each Ski Freeze. Considering all the years Ski Freeze Memphis has been held, they have raised over $350,000 for The Dream Factory........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Search Still On For Man Last Seen Floating On Ice........
After several days of searching for 34 year old Aaron Duenke, responders still not found any signs of him.
Duenke was last spotted around 2 pm Tuesday afternoon, as he floated past the Washington Riverfront. He has been described as an adventurous person and experienced at paddling along the Missouri River.
Duenke's brother Chris says that he apparently did this last year, but didn't go far. This adventure was set to end at Labadie, but family members lost contact with Duenke.........

The St. Louis Aquarium The Aquarium's River Otters Celebrated Their 4th Birthday........
The three river otters at the St. Louis Aquarium recently celebrated their 4th birthday. The otters, Sawyer, Thatcher and Finn have lived in the aquarium since it opened in 2019.
According to animal trainer, Ryan Beeble, the North American River otters are founf from Florida all the way through North America to Canada. The aquarium's otters originally hailed from Florida.
As part of the birthday festivities, aquarium guests sang and wrote happy birthday messages on the otter enclosure glass. They also watch the otters enjoy a birthday cake........

Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri The Missouri River Ice Jam Breaks Up After Causing Record Lows........
The National Weather Service in St. Louis reports that the ice jam along the Missouri River near Boonville officially broke up on Friday.
The NWS St. Louis states that more water is on it's way downstream, however, any remaining ice may cause another jam if ice get stuck in the shallow waters.
This week, the temperatures are forecasted to be in the 60s this week, which will help break up the ice jam, allowing river levels to return to normal levels........

Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri Low River Levels Allow Crews To Remove Submerged Vehicles........
This past week, the Missouri River in the Jefferson City, Missouri region has fallen to record low levels thanks to an ice jam near Boonville, Missouri.
The low river levels have allowed crews to recover several vehicles from the Missouri River. On Tuesday afternoon, crews pulled a truck from the river.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that this is the third vehicle recovered from the river in four days........
