Upper Mississippi River Basin

Flooding Threat Along The Mississippi River Increasing........

So far, it has been a wet winter across a large part of the Midwest.  By the month's end, the area near Quincy, Illinois will record a top ten wettest February, and Minnesota and Wisconsin are still digging out from a recent snowstorm.

All of this water will eventually find it's way into the Mississippi River and hydrologists are concerned that it could become a problem later this spring.   According to Matt Wilson, senior hydrologist with the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, the northern snowpack and recent wet weather has considerably raised the chances of flooding along the Mainstem Mississippi River.

Wilson says that over the past two weeks, some portions of the Upper Mississippi RIver Basin received 200 - 400 percent of it's normal precipitation and a lot of that fell as snow.  He adds that the snowfall was very wet and loaded with moisture that will flow into the river.......

Karen Halley.....

Please read this entire post. I will try to explain and answer most questions.

As most of you know, Karen Halley had a bout with lung cancer late in the summer and went through chemo and radiation to hopefully cure her from it. Through September and October 2022 she did just that. Unfortunately she will be on oxygen the rest of her life but she has dealt with that. She was due to have CT scans in late February 2023 to check the status of the shrunken lung mass. In January 2023 Karen felt some pains in her upper right stomach area and we had it checked out at the hospital. Scans showed a mass in her liver. Then more tests again. A series of blood tests, a liver biopsy, a P.E.T. scan, and a brain MRI. The MRI showed fine but the P.E.T. scan and liver biopsy showed that the lung cancer had metastasized somehow, even through the chemo and radiation for the lung cancer, and now shows the same cancer now in her liver. Squeamish non small cell cancer. It’s supposed to be slow moving but the mass showed to be 6cm. Two weeks later when we got the results of all the tests it had grown to 10cm. Karen has been through chemo twice, she had breast cancer 13 years ago and beat that, and now the lung cancer and basically beat that. She does not want to feel like hell and go through chemo again. The doctor told us the regimen this time for the liver cancer would be very aggressive and would make her sick. She would have to take steroids for 3 days after each chemo session. Chemo would also include immunotherapy, which is another type of chemo. That type has side effects that attack any organs that are compromised, while it also attacks cancer cells and kills them. This we’re told is stage 4 and has gone far, too far for surgery without first doing chemo and hopefully lessening the mass. Karen wants to feel as normal as possible and be able to see her family, talk with friends, be as happy as possible in what may be her last days with us. She is adamant that she will not do chemo again and believes it may only give another couple extra months anyway. She is tired of fighting it. Karen is very weak but making the best of things for now. Karen is happy to see anyone that wants to come by or call, but talking too much makes her tired. She does not want sympathy during these times, she wants to feel happy and just discuss good times.  All her family and a few very close friends have been made aware. We want to let everyone else know what’s happening and this is a way to get it out there, though not really the best idea. Hopefully we won’t get anyone we don’t know that is trying to take advantage of a situation. Please let Karen have her way of dealing with this terrible thing, and keep her in your prayers and thoughts. If you want to call Karen or come by to visit and see her, please respect her wishes. If you have any questions, please call Mike to ask them.

Thank you so much for your consideration and for reading this, and please pass it on to anyone that may not see this.

Mike and Karen Halley hail out of "Yacht Club St Louis" in the boat "Over Exposed".

Freedom School Floated On The Mississippi River In The 1800s........

In 1847, the state of Missouri outlawed the education of all black and mixed-race people, so educators had to come up with a way to keep educating people without breaking the law.

John Berry Meachum and his wife, Mary Meachum took the lessons from the basement of the first African Baptist Church and relocated them to a steamboat anchored in the Mississippi River at St. Louis.

Called the Freedom School, the steamboat would head out into the river for classes to be held, and return to land after the studies were over.  The Mississippi River was federally regulated, and outside of the Missouri jurisdiction........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Docks Damaged By Monday's Gale-Force Winds........

On Monday, heavy storms and gale-force winds caused significant damage to docks at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Some of the docks sustained severe damage, with several breaking free from the shoreline.

The storms that blasted across Missouri had wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.  The winds wreaked havoc on trees, roofs, siding and docks.  Several dock companies reported damaged docks following Monday's storms.

Jordan Crabtree with Rough Water Dock says that the winds were out of control.  He added that everyone's dock furniture was blown into the water, and they have been helping residents recover their furniture from the water........

Clark is a fourth generation descendant of William Clark, who along with Meriwether Lewis, led the Corps of Discovery on their journey to survey and document the Missouri and Columbia Rivers.

The Wood River Museum and Visitor Center is open 1 - 4 pm, the first and third Friday and Saturday of each month.  Special arrangements for schools and organizations can be made for viewing not only the canoe, but a scale model of Camp Dubois and other Lewis and Clark related items........

River History.......

February 27, 1964 in River History

The Globe-Democrat reported that the old sternwheeler that had housed the St. Louis Yacht Club since 1947 would become a riverboat restaurant. The name would be changed to the Becky Thatcher and the boat would be moved up river to near the Goldenrod Showboat.
At that time the 85-year-old craft was believed to be the oldest still afloat on the Mississippi but had no pilot house, stacks or stern wheel remaining.

Ken Warby, The Fastest Man On The Water Has Passed Away........

Australian Ken Warby, the current unlimited world water speed record holder at 317.6 miles per hour passed away on February 20th at 83 years old.  Warby was the only person to design, build and drive a boat to an unlimited world water speed record.

Warby was a mechanical engineer from Newcastle, New South Wales and he spent four years building the Spirit of Australia in his backyard.  According to the Spirit of Australia II team, Warby set many Australian speed records prior to setting the world speed record in 1977.  He set his second and current unlimited record of 317.6 MPH in 1978.

Warby was named as a member of the Most Excellent Order by Queen Elizabeth II for services to powerboating.  He also earned two Union Internationale Motonautique gold medals and was the only racer inducted into the National Sporting Hall of Fame........

Mississippi River Near St. Paul, Minnesota

Early Designs For The Mississippi River Lock & Dam Land Unveiled........

The Friends of the Falls recently revealed early design ideas for the land adjacent to the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam which was shut down to commercial navigation in order to prevent the spread of invasive species.

The group was formed in 2016 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the lock would close and they have been looking for new ways to use the facility and surrounding lands.  Originally, the Friends of the Falls envisioned a world class visitors center that would educate visitors about the river, the falls and the city.

Following a years-long discovery process, Friends of the Falls has settled upon a Native American inspired vision for the site, focusing on the cultural significance of the region to the Dakota people and other Native communities that inhabited the land long before the city was established........

Mississippi River Facts

Where Is The Tallest Waterfall Along The Mississippi River?

The tallest waterfall along the Mississippi River happens to be the only waterfall on the river.  At 49 feet high, the St. Anthony Falls near St. Paul, Minnesota is an impressive waterfall with an interesting history.

The waterfall dates back to the last known ice age and experts believe that this waterfall, originally known as River Warren Falls, was once approximately 200 feet tall.  Over time, however, the waterfall began to erode, causing it to shift up the Mississippi River from it's origins where St. Paul is located to day.

Due to the location change and erosion that split the falls into the St. Anthony Falls and the Minnehaha Falls, it was believed that an intervention was necessary.  Eventually, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reconstructed the St. Anthony Falls to avoid further erosion........

Grafton Ferry Study To Proceed........

Shifting the Grafton Ferry to running on a year-round schedule in the future has taken another step forward as a contract has been awarded to conduct a feasibility study.

Last fall, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that $210,000 had been included on the 2023 Statewide Planning & Research Program to conduct a study of the ferry systems in the Grafton/Calhoun Region.

Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow says that they will soon release what the consultants will be looking at.  The Grafton Ferry reduces the amount of time it takes to travel from Grafton to the St. Louis/St. Charles region........

Town Makes Most Beautiful Small Town List........

Travel and Leisure magazine recently posted their 2023 list of the 20 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the U.S. and the tiny town of Hermann, Missouri made the list.

Travel and Leisure says that the town of Hermann is a small town with a population of just 2,200 people and it made the list because of it's scenic views and the local wineries.

Article author Carrie Dennis says that Hermann lays among the rolling hills along the Missouri River and is surrounded by wineries.  Visit Hermann states that Hermann's wineries sell more than 200,000 gallons of wine annually, providing a third of Missouri's total wine sales........

Mississippi River History

Vicksburg, Mississippi Was Once The Largest City On The River........

Bubba Bolm, director and curator of the Old Court House Museum-Eva W. Davis Memorial says that just before the beginning of the Civil War, Vicksburg, Mississippi was the biggest city along the Mississippi River.  In 1860, the population of Vicksburg was 5,000 people.

Author Christopher Morris says in his book, Becoming Southern:  The Evolution of a Way of Life, Warren County and Vicksburg, Mississippi, 1770 -1860 says that the public wharf was crowded with steamboats, barges and pirogues ready for shipping and receiving goods from domestic and international markets for the city's residents.

Reportedly, more bales of hay were shipped from Vicksburg than from any other place in the state.  Bolm says that the river, the rail and the rich soil are what led to the city's success........

Personals

The outlook indicates that the chances of flooding along the Mississippi River in the eastern portions of Iowa increased considerably, bumping it into the above normal category.  Some of the tributary rivers in Iowa showed a slight increase in flooding risk, but it still remains near normal.

The main factor for the significant increase in flood risk along the Mississippi River has been the continued precipitation across the region, especially the continued increase in the snowpack in the upstream drainage areas........

Towboat Crew Rescued following Rock Dike Allision.........

On February 17, at around 7:30 pm, first responders rescued six people from a towboat after it became lodged on a rock dike in the Lower Mississippi River near Columbus, Kentucky.

According to a post on the Hickman County Emergency Management Facebook page, a Marquette Transportation vessel struck a rock dike, causing a number of barges to break free from the tow at Lower Mississippi River Mile Marker 934 near Wolf Island.

The vessel was aground on the dike, causing the boat to be unstable, prompting the crew to decide they needed assistance to safely return to land.  All six crew members were dropped off at the Columbus boat ramp and checked over by an ambulance crew........

Personals

Mississippi River Flood Risk

The Second Spring Flood Forecast Shows Increased Mississippi River Risk........

The National Weather Service has released the second of three spring snowmelt flooding outlooks and it contains some significant changes.  The forecast shows that the likelihood of flooding along the Mississippi River has increased significantly.

The risk of flooding along the Mississippi River is now in the above normal category.  The Iowa tributaries of the Mississippi River show a slight increase in flooding risk, but are maintaining a near normal spring flood risk.

The biggest contributing factor in the increased flood risk along the Mississippi River has been the ongoing precipitation across the region, especially the continued building of the snowpack in the northern-most upstream drainage areas........

River History.........

February 24, 1902 in River History

A Pittsburgh syndicate bought up all of Valley Park, Missouri on the banks of the Meramec River planning to make a new community based around glass-making facilities. The town was expected to boom from 200 residents to 10,000. The flood of ’02 washed those plans away.

Illinois River Near Ottawa, Illinois

The Illinois River Is Expected To Rise Quickly........

Thanks to this weeks rainfall, the Illinois River will be quickly rising into flood stage over the weekend.  Luckily, there is no more additional rainfall in the forecast.

The Illinois River at Ottawa is expected to rise to flood stage by Saturday night and start receding Sunday evening.  At Utica, the Illinois RIver is expected to rise to flood stage today, topping out about four feet above flood stage by Saturday morning.

At La Salle-Peru, the Illinois is forecasted to reach flood stage overnight Friday, rising to a few feet above flood stage by Saturday morning.  The river levels will fall gradually, but not before rising to flood stage at Peoria early next week,,,,,,,,

BWI Judge Jim Rhodes said, “This subject could have been just another boring technical piece on diesel maintenance, but the author cleverly introduces famous fictional detectives to pose the question: Who killed this diesel, and how did the murderer do it?"

Second place: “When the Tail Wags the Dog” by BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Dan Armitage (April/May 2022 issue). A scary firsthand experience creates the perfect entry to explain how to reduce the chances of fishtailing or jackknifing while trailering a boat.

Category: Boating Issues, News and Analysis (sponsored by Mercury Marine)

Second place: “How Often are Your Electronic Charts Updated?” by BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Tim Murphy (November/December 2022 issue). Electronic navigation charts aren’t updated as often as boaters think they are. Tim gets to the bottom of the issue and offers a few workarounds for when having the latest info is critical.

Third place: “From Barges to Pleasure Boats” by BoatUS Magazine senior editor Rich Armstrong (February/March 2022 issue). BoatUS is helping to shape the future of recreational boating on New York’s historic Erie Canal.

Category: Environmental Awareness & Education (sponsored by Torqeedo)

Third place: “Can we Rise with the Tide?” by BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Fiona McGlynn (September/October 2022 issue). Sea levels have been creeping up for decades, and the speed is accelerating. Recreational boaters need to be proactive.

River History.........

February 23, 1983 in River History

The EPA announced the buyout of the town of Times Beach, Missouri on the Meramec River of which Russell Bliss had sprayed with dioxin-laced waste oil. Contaminated soil was incinerated and Time Beach is now Route 66 State Park. This was one of the worst environmental disasters in our nation's history.

Could The Mississippi River Be Affected By Ohio Train Derailment?

For better than two weeks, residents of East Palestine, Ohio have been concerned about air and water quality after a train hauling deadly chemicals derailed, releasing harmful chemicals into the environment.

Dangerous chemicals have been released into the air and waterways, such as the Ohio River, which flows into the Mississippi River.  Wile the Environmental Protection Agency says that the water in Ohio is safe, residents have reported dead fish near waterways.

Concerns have been raised about water safety downstream and into the Mississippi River.  Dr. Brian Waldron, Director of Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research at the University of Memphis says that the Mississippi RIver is so massive that dilution will help considerably........

Study:  Diversion Plan Could Affect Mississippi Sound Oysters........

According to a recent study commissioned by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources freshwater from Louisiana's proposed $800 million Mid-Breton Sediment Diversion could present a significant threat to oysters and other fisheries in the Mississippi Sound.

Jerry Wiggert, lead author of the study and associate director of the University of Southern Mississippi School of Ocean Science & Engineering, the diversion would decrease the salinity levels in parts of the western Mississippi Sound near Bay St. Louis where oysters are grown.

Wiggert adds that the decreased salinity would be in the area for up to 50 days of more.  Oysters can typically tolerate salinity levels of between 5 and 15 parts per thousand........

Yamaha Released 2022 Results........

Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. recently released their consolidated financial results for their fiscal year 2022, which ended on December 31, 2022.  Net sales increased by 24.1 percent to $16.734 billion, as compared to $13.5 billion in 2021.  Operating income increased by 24 percent to $1.7 billion.  Ordinary income rose 26.3 percent to $1.8 billion.

Yamaha's marine segment posted net sales increases of 32.2 percent year over year to $3.8 billion and operating income increased 42.2 percent to $812 million.  Yamaha reports an increase in demand for outboards higher than 200 horsepower.  Watercraft demand remained strong, however, component shortages affected supply, resulting in reduced unit sales.

In a statement released by Yamaha, the company states that the marine products business as a whole saw sales and income increases due to the positive effect of the yen's depreciation in addition to progress made in price pass-on efforts from the third quarter of the fiscal year........

Construction Set To Begin On A New Interstate 270 Bridge........

This week, the Missouri Department of Transportation blocked off the ramp from Riverview Drive in St. Louis to eastbound Interstate 270 to construct a new interchange.  The ramp will remain closed for approximately a year.

This closure is significant in that it is the first step in the construction of a new Chain of Rocks Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois.  MoDOT officials say that the first substructures for the new bridge are expected to be poured later this month.

According to an overview on the Illinois Department of Transportation website, the new Chain of Rocks Bridge will actually be twin bridges, one with the same alignment as the current span, and the second directly south of it........

Sea Tow Seeking Support For Life Jacket Loaner Program........

The Sea Tow Foundation is looking for donations to help fulfill the requests for life jackets they have received for their 2023 Life Jacket Loaner Program.  A record 250 applications from 46 states were submitted this year.

The record number of requests has created a gap of 15,000 life jackets between what cities and organizations need and what the Sea Tow Foundation is able to provide via grants and donations.  The Sea Tow Foundation is also trying to replace the dozens of Life Jacket Loaner stands lost by Hurricane Ian last year.

The Sea Tow Foundation is calling on businesses and individuals to help provide boaters across the nation with the resources needed for a safe and fun day on the water........

$2.26 Billion In Funding Set Aside For Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion........

Officials report that everything is coming together for the start of construction on Louisiana's massive Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project planned for the west bank of the Mississippi River near Ironton, Louisiana.

On February 1st, Mid-Barataria sediment diversion project secured a source of funding, as the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group approved $2.26 billion for the project.

The structure, which will be located at Lower Mississippi River Mile Marker 60.7, will feed up to 75,000 cubic feet per second of water into a 2 mile canal into the upper reaches of the Barataria Bay, which is experiencing some of the most rapid land-loss in Louisiana........

Mississippi River Near Burlington, Iowa

Southeastern Iowa Expecting Normal Spring Flood Risk........

According to the National Weather Service, the Southeastern Iowa region is in for a normal spring along the Mississippi River.  Not much has changed in the two weeks since the National Weather Service forecasted that the combination of a warm, dry winter and a wet spring would bring a normal risk of flooding.

Matt Wilson, the National Weather Service Quad Cities Hydrologist says that they are anticipating an average threat as far as the spring flood threat is concerned.  He added that this is not an over the top year.

Early February predictions starting at the beginning of February gave Burlington a 70 percent chance of reaching minor flood levels of at least 15 feet before the middle of May.  They say that there is a less than 2 percent chance that there will be severe flooding, like was seen in 2019........
